The No. 17 Lindenwood men's soccer team defeated the Northeastern State RiverHawks 2-0 on Saturday afternoon from Bacone, Okla. The victory extends Lindenwood's unbeaten streak to 11 games, including 10 consecutive wins.
Lindenwood controlled the pace of play early in the first half, as the Lions registered the first four shots on goal of the match. Lindenwood held Northeastern State without a shot until the 41st minute.
Shortly after the RiverHawk's first shot on goal of the match, the Lions converted a scoring chance of their own on the other end of the field. At the 41:47 mark of the opening half,
Thomas Hutcheson passed to
Nikolas Kondic, who headed the ball into the net. Kondic's score was his first goal of the season, and sent Lindenwood in front 1-0 heading into halftime.
With 11:21 gone by in the second half, Lindenwood extended its lead to a two-goal margin in the 57th minute.
Xhovani Dokaj scored for the third-consecutive game, and gave the Lions a commanding 2-0 lead.
Kyle Weinrich assisted on Dokaj's MIAA-leading 14th goal of the season.
Lindenwood limited Northeastern State to just two shots for the remainder of the match, as it protected the two-goal lead until time expired.
Aleksa Nenadic made the start in goal for Lindenwood, turning in three saves en route to his 11th win of the season.
In the end, Lindenwood held the edge in shots (13-8) and shots on goal (10-3). Each team took five corner kicks.
Following the victory, Lindenwood improves its record to 11-2-2 and 6-0-0 in MIAA play. With the loss, Northeastern State moves its record to 5-8-0 and 1-4-0 in conference play. The Lions will return to action on Wednesday afternoon for a non-conference matchup with Delta State from Cleveland, Miss.
