The Lindenwood women's soccer team defeated Northwest Missouri, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Hunter Stadium after a pair of goals broke the 1-1 tie late in the second half.Â
A pair of seniors began the day for the Lady Lions. In the 13th minute,
Alexis Robbers scored her first goal of the season after receiving a header pass from
Kat Roe. Robbers dribbled past a defender for 20 yards and fired a shot from the 18-yard box to the left side of the net to make the score 1-0.
Â
Becky Roberts almost tallied another goal for Lindenwood five minutes later, but Northwest keeper Ashley Malloy made the stop to send the ball to
Jackie Lindner. Lindner immediately shot, but the attempt was blocked as the chance was over for the Lady Lions.
Â
Northwest Missouri had opportunities in the 21st and 27th minute, turning possession into a shot on goal, but keeper
Mary McGilvray saved both attempts to keep the Bearcats scoreless.
Â
At halftime, Lindner and Roberts led Lindenwood with two shots apiece, while Danielle Wolfe and Izzy Romano each had a pair of shots for Northwest Missouri. McGilvray made three saves on six shots in the opening half.
Â
Lindenwood began the second frame with a pair of chances, getting shots from Robbers and Roe, but each went high of the net in the first few minutes. Roberts also had her chance in the 69th minute, reversing the field after a Bearcat corner kick and charging down the entire field and putting a shot on goal into the hands of the Northwest Missouri keeper.
Â
The Bearcats received a couple more corner kick opportunities right after that, but the Lindenwood defense held strong and turned away each chance.
Â
The visitors finally capitalized in the 79th minute when Izzy Romano dribbled around some pressure and fired a shot past McGilvray into the bottom left corner for the equalizer.
Â
The Lady Lions would not be kept down, however. Just three minutes later after a corner kick, Lindner applied pressure of her own and ripped a shot into the box that a Northwest Missouri defender knocked down with her hand to give Lindenwood a penalty kick. Roe would take the kick and shoot it past the Bearcats keeper for her team-leading eighth score of the season and third penalty-shot goal of the year.
Â
Roberts would add one onto the Lindenwood lead less than three minutes later, charging down the field into the box and shooting it on the ground to the bottom-right corner to make the score 3-1, which would hold as the final whistle blew.
Â
For the match, Roberts led all players with four shots and three on goal. Both Robbers and
Kristin Brewer recorded their first points of the season as the regular season comes to a close.
Â
The win improves Lindenwood to 9-7-1 finish the regular season and head into the MIAA tournament that begins on Wednesday. Holding the tie-breakers among Emporia State and Missouri Western proved to be helpful as the Lady Lions earned the five seed and will head to Northeastern State for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The semi-finals and conference title match will be hosted by the highest-remaining seed after first-round action has concluded.
