No. 10 North Dakota Proves Too Much For Women’s Hockey

The Lindenwood women's hockey team fell to the North Dakota Fighting Hawks 5-0 on Friday afternoon from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo. The game was the first of a two-game non-conference series between the two teams.

Lindenwood received a power-play chance early in the first period, as North Dakota was called for a tripping minor at the 3:49 mark of the opening frame. However, it would be the Fighting Hawks who capitalized shortly after, tallying a shorthanded goal 46 seconds into the two-minute penalty. Amy Menke scored the goal for North Dakota, while Kayla Gardner was credited with the lone assist.

The Lady Lions would only send two shots on net during the period, and were out shot 12-2 over the first 20 minutes. Lindenwood's Jolene deBruyn, the CHA's goaltender of the month for November, turned in 11 saves in the period, which ended with North Dakota holding its one-goal lead.

North Dakota would extend its lead to a three-goal margin during the second period, scoring two even-strength goals. Rebekah Kolstad and Taylor Flaherty had the goals for the Fighting Hawks. Lindenwood was held to one shot during the period, which ended with North Dakota leading 3-0.

The Fighting Hawks would tack on two more scores during the final period, as they brought the game to its final score of 5-0. Gardner and Ryleigh Houston scored the goals for North Dakota.
In the end, North Dakota held the edge in shots 39-11.

deBruyn recorded 34 saves, including 14 during the second period.

Following the loss, Lindenwood moves to 3-12-2. With the victory, North Dakota improves to 10-6-5. The Lady Lions and Fighting Hawks will conclude their two-game series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. from Lindenwood Ice Arena.
