Women's Basketball Fails to Maintain Lead in 61-54 Loss

The Lindenwood women's basketball team fell 61-54 to Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday afternoon in Hyland Arena.
 
Lindenwood outrebounded the Tritons 37-32, but was outscored in the paint 32-24.  Missouri-St. Louis shot 17-of-28 from the free-throw line while the Lady Lions shot 12-of-15 from the charity stripe.  Sara Ross led the team with 11 points and six rebounds while Gabby Walker and Lindsay Medlen each tallied 10 points and six rebounds.
 
The Lady Lions opened the game hot including a three-point play by Ross to put Lindenwood up 6-2 just over two minutes into the game.  Walker forced a steal later in the quarter which led to a Megan Foster three-pointer to give the Lady Lions a nine-point lead with seven minutes left in the opening frame.  Ross extended the lead to double digits with back-to-back free-throws and Alex Haley drained a three-pointer to put Lindenwood up 16-2.  Beth Maenpaa hit two free-throws to give Lindenwood its largest lead of the game at 18-2 with three minutes remaining in the first quarter.
 
The Lady Lions held an 18-6 lead after the first quarter and carried the success into the second frame.  Missouri-St. Louis battled back to get within six points at the 6:26 mark, but Medlen knocked down a shot from deep to put Lindenwood back up by nine points.  The Lady Lions continued to maintain a comfortable lead throughout the first half, and Haley hit a buzzer-beater to put Lindenwood up 30-18 at the break.  Lindenwood was 3-for-7 in the first half from three-point range and outrebounded the Tritons 24-15.
 
The Tritons did not fade away in the third quarter and battled back to single-digit deficit within the first two minutes.  Missouri-St. Louis pulled within three points multiple times, and the quarter ended with a three-pointer by the Tritons to tie the game at 43-43 heading into the fourth frame.  Lindenwood unraveled in the final quarter as Missouri-St. Louis was 6-for-7 from the charity stripe and the Lady Lions did not attempt a free-throw in the fourth quarter.  Lindenwood held its last lead at the 4:37 mark as the Tritons fought back to a 61-54 win over the Lady Lions.
 
Lindenwood falls to 5-6 on the year while the Tritons move to 6-4 on the season.  The Lady Lions will return to action on Thursday to host Northeastern State at 5:30 p.m. in Hyland Arena.
