The Lindenwood men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker for the second straight Saturday. This time, Washburn edged the Lions in Hyland Arena by a 59-57 score.
The game was back-and-forth and had 12 ties and 12 lead changes. Lindenwood started out slow offensively, which led to Washburn grabbing a 16-8 lead a little over 11 minutes into the game. The Lions chipped away and tied the game at halftime when
Brad Newman hit a shot in the lane at the halftime buzzer.
The second half featured most of the ties and lead changes. The Lions grabbed their biggest lead of the game at four with 5:44 left, and led by two at 57-55 with 4:30 remaining. That turned out to be the final points for Lindenwood though as its offense went cold down the stretch. The Ichabods tied the game at 57 with 4:17 left, and then took the lead on a layup with 30 seconds remaining. Lindenwood had two three-point attempts in the final 10 seconds, including one at the buzzer, but neither found the mark.Â
Washburn finished the game shooting 52.1 percent from the field, including 64 percent in the second half. The Lions shot just 37 percent from the field, and under 30 percent from three-point range.Â
Cory Arentsen led Lindenwood with 33 points, and surpassed 1,000 career points in the game. He reached that mark with the three-pointer, his fourth of the game, that put the Lions up by four with 5:44 remaining, and finished the contest with 1,003 career points. Arentsen also led the team with three assists and two steals, and he had four rebounds.
Newman finished with 10 points and Mader added eight to go along with six rebounds.
Stanislas Heili had a team-high seven rebounds and three blocks.
Zachary Biggs finished with six rebounds and he had two assists.
Prior to the game, Lindenwood's four seniors were honored as part of the Senior Day festivities. The players were Mader, Heili, Biggs, and Arentsen.
Lindenwood falls to 15-9 overall and 11-7 in the MIAA. The Lions go on the road for two games next week, starting at Fort Hays on Thursday evening.
