Lady Lions Fall to Nebraska-Kearney

The Lindenwood women's basketball team fell 72-57 to Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday afternoon in Kearney, Neb.
 
Nebraska-Kearney immediately put the pedal to the metal with a three-pointer just ten seconds into the game.  CeCe Rapp was able to answer with a layup, but the Lopers went on a 5-0 run to extend their lead.  In the next three minutes, the Lady Lions went on a 10-0 run to take a 12-8 lead.  Nebraska-Kearney answered with a run of its own, and regained the lead at the 2:42 mark of the first quarter.  Kassidy Gengenbacher drained a long three-pointer to put Lindenwood back out in front , and the Lady Lions closed out the first quarter with a 15-14 lead.
 
Bri Wilber opened up the second quarter with a bucket, and was followed by back-to-back free throws for Jenny Rocha.  The Lopers went on an 11-0 run before Kylie Ferguson made a layup to make it a 25-21 Nebraska-Kearney advantage.  The Lady Lions were held scoreless for nearly three minutes as the Lopers tacked on eight points.  Beth Maenpaa scored the next three points for Lindenwood, but could not slow down the Lopers offense as Nebraska-Kearney led 38-26 at the half.
 
Lindenwood opened up the second half with three points by Charisse Williams, and a jumper by Wilber to cut the deficit to seven.  The Lopers again put together a significant run to take a 47-31 lead with 6:32 remaining in the third quarter.  Laremey Becker of Nebraska-Kearney hit a three-pointer to score her 26th point of the game, but Gengenbacher responded with a three-ball of her own to pull Lindenwood within 14 points.  The Lady Lions struggled to put up point for the remainder of the third quarter, as the Lopers held a 56-41 lead going into the final quarter of play.
 
Lindenwood scored just three points in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter.  With just over five minutes to go, the Lady Lions were down 65-48 and could not find a way to string together a run.  The Lady Lions scored just nine points in the final quarter, and fell 72-57 to the Lopers.  Lindenwood outrebounded the Lopers 42-38, but turned the ball over 20 times allowing the Lopers to score 26 points.
 
Gengenbacher led the Lady Lions with 12 points, and grabbed seven rebounds.  Vanessa Zailo snagged nine rebounds, while Williams put up nine points.
 
The loss sets the Lindenwood back to 7-19 on the year and 3-17 in the MIAA.  The Lady Lions will return home on Wednesday to take on Central Missouri at 5:30 p.m. for the final regular season game in Hyland Arena this season.
