After dropping both games on Saturday, the Lindenwood softball team was unable to put together a consistent offense on Sunday and lost both games to Cameron and William Jewel.
Lindenwood 0, Cameron 8Cameron wasted no time in game one with stringing together hits as a leadoff walk, followed by a double and a three-run home run gave the Aggies an early advantage on the Lady Lions. Starter
Bethany Fountain settled down and retired the next three hitters to get her team into the dugout to score some runs of their own. Unfortunately, the team couldn't get anything going, and the scoreboard didn't see any action again until the fourth inning.
Fountain retired the first two Cameron batters of the inning, but a two-out walk and a couple hits brought home the fourth run for the Aggies. In the top of the fifth, Fountain surrendered four straight hits and three runs chasing her from the circle.
Kaitlyn VanHooser came in relief and struck out a pair of hitters, but also walked two to give Cameron an 8-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.
With two outs, Fountain broke up the no-hit bid with a single to the left side, but that was the only offense the Lady Lions could muster as they lost their third game in a row.
Lindenwood 0, William Jewel 5The Lady Lions were shut down in the top of the first in game two, and
Morgan Colvis took down the first two William Jewel hitters in the bottom of the inning. The Cardinals put together a couple two-out hits, but Colvis induced a groundout to end the inning unscathed.
After repeating in the second inning, William Jewel broke through in the third. Three consecutive singles and a pair of RBI groundouts gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead before Colvis struck out the William Jewel batter to end the inning.
Madeline Bohr drew her team-leading eighth walk of the season to lead off the fourth. After a fielder's choice put
Adele Linderman on first and a
Alexandra Newcomb single, the Lady Lions had on two on with only one out and a chance to respond. The William Jewel pitcher forced a couple groundouts to get out of the jam and maintain the Cardinals' lead of 2-0.
William Jewel tacked onto its lead with a couple RBI singles in the fifth, followed by a home run in the sixth to hold a 5-0 advantage. Newcomb singled to leadoff the top of the seventh, but after a double play, the Lady Lions couldn't manage to push across any runs after a
Faith Koffron knock, and Lindenwood was shutout for the second time on the day.
The Lady Lions get back to the diamond from February 26-28 in Rosemont, Ill. at the Rosemont Dome Tournament where they will square off against teams from the GLIAC and GLVC.
