Both Lindenwood tennis teams came out on top against Missouri Baptist on Friday night at Creve Coeur Racket Club. It was the first win of the spring season for the men's side while the women improve to 2-0.
The women won by a final score of 7-2, losing just one singles and one doubles match.
Anna Barbasheva and
Alexis McCarthy cruised to an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles followed by the pairing of
Alexandra Medvedeva and
Diana Castro winning 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
Gloria Marras won a competitive battle at No. 2 singles. She took the first set 6-2 before the second set was evenly matched. Marras eventually iced the set by a 7-5 score.
Clara Piccamiglio and Castro picked up victories at No. 3 and 4 respectively which sealed the dual. After clinching the match against Southern Indiana,
Daria Ivanova had another tight match as it went to a third set tiebreaker. She cruised to a 10-3 win to give the Lady Lions a victory at No. 5.
Rebeca Aguilar capped the night with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6.
The men had to fight until the very end as the match was tied at four wins apiece. The match lied in the hands of
Filip Bogic at No. 1 singles as he needed a third set tiebreaker to clinch the win for the Lions. The Lions fell 2-1 in doubles with Bogic and
Naoufal El Idrissi coming away with the only win at No. 1 doubles.
The men's dual had five total tiebreakers, including three of the third-set variety. The Lions won four of them and all of the third-set tiebreakers. El Idrissi won 10-4 at No. 2 singles and
Adrian Beloqui came out with a 10-2 win at No. 6. Tudor Ghenea also won at No. 5 singles by a final of 6-0, 7-6(5).
The Lady Lions will take a break before traveling to Northwest Missouri for their first MIAA matchup on March 12. The Lions will take on McKendree on March 1 at Lebanon, Ill.
