The Lindenwood men's lacrosse team fought hard until the end, but could not hold off Rollins' late offensive surge as the Tars won 11-7 on Sunday at Hunter Stadium. It was the Lions' first loss of the season.
In the first quarter, the Lions outscored the Tars 2-1.
Sean Darroch assisted for the fifth time this season on
Kevin Eskridge's goal to tie the game at one apiece before he gave the Lions the lead on a goal of his own.
The Lions came into the second quarter looking for
Josh Coons' to get a scoring opportunity, and he found a pass from
Connor Eskridge to take to the goal for his seventh goal of the season. The Tars responded by scoring two goals within a 1:30 span to tie the game up at three. However, K. Eskridge would give the Lions the lead heading into halftime as he scored his second goal of the day and eighth of the season at the 3:20 mark.
Darroch would help extend the lead to begin the second half as K. Eskridge dished him the ball for his second goal of the day and a 5-3 lead for the Lions. In response, the Tars again scored twice in a row to tie the game back up at five. At the 7:19 mark,
David Corazalla jumped onto the scoring train with his 11th goal of the season to give the Lions a one-goal lead with 7:19 remaining in the quarter. Rollins tied the game up for the third time as the quarter came to an end.
Five minutes into the fourth quarter, C. Eskridge gave the Lions the lead after he scored on an unassisted play. But they would not score again for the rest of the game. Rollins stormed through the last 10 minutes of the game with four goals including three within the last two minutes.
Rollins controlled the ball on offense for a chunk of the game, out-shooting the Lions by a 42-26 margin and 14-5 in the second quarter. Both teams were close to dead-even on groundballs, but the Tars recorded just one more with 27 total. The Tars also dominated faceoffs as they won 14 to Lindenwood's seven.
Ben Besancenez collected 10 saves for the day. Corazalla led the Lions with five groundballs and seven shots taken. Kevin and
Connor Eskridge and Darroch tied for the most points with three.
Joe Shelly won all seven faceoffs for the Lions on 14 attempts.
After the loss, the Lions will travel to Ohio Valley to compete in their first ECAC game of the season on Thursday, March 3 at 5:30 pm central time.
