Women’s Hockey Edged in Series Clinching Game

The Lindenwood women's hockey team was defeated by the Robert Morris Colonials on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 5-1. The game was played at 84 Lumber Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa. and was the final game of the best two-of-three series between the two teams.

Lady Lion forward Shara Jasper was whistled off the ice for a hooking penalty just 32 seconds into the first period, setting the Colonials up on a power play opportunity. Robert Morris would capitalize on its chance with 13 seconds remaining on the two-minute penalty to Jasper. Amanda Pantaleo was credited with the goal, while Maggie Lague and Ashley Vesci picked up the assists. The power play goal would be the lone score of the period, as Lindenwood and Robert Morris ended the period with nine shots each, and the score 1-0 in favor of the Colonials.

The second period of play would see each team score once. Robert Morris would add to its lead first, scoring with 4:56 to play in the middle period. Lague would light the lamp for the Colonials, with the assist going to Vesci. The Lady Lions would respond 41 seconds later with a goal of their own. Shara Jasper cut the Robert Morris lead in half with her 23rd goal of the season, and third of the series. Assisting on Jasper's CHA-leading score were Kaitlyn Davidson and Britannia Gillanders, their third and eighth helpers of the season. Lindenwood would send 16 shots on goal during the second period, which would come to a close with the Colonials in front 2-1.

The third period ice tilted heavily in favor of the Colonials who would score three times during the period, bringing the game to its eventual final of 5-1. Vesci and Mackenzie Johnston would score just 10 seconds apart at the 9:53 and 10:03 mark of the final period, pushing the Robert Morris lead to 4-1. Vesci would record her fourth point of the afternoon with an empty net goal late in the game.

In goal for Lindenwood, Nicole Hensley made 20 saves in her final game as a Lady Lion. Lindenwood held the edge in shots for the game, outshooting Robert Morris 35-25. Jasper and Sarah Bobrowski tied for the team-lead in the shot category, each registering eight shots. On special teams, the Lady Lion power play unit failed to score on either of its two attempts, while the penalty-kill unit ended the game one for two.
