The Lindenwood softball team had its chance Sunday afternoon, but fell to Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla. both games of the doubleheader. Down three entering the seventh in game one, the Lady Lions rallied to load the bases and score twice, but would lose 4-3. In game two, Lindenwood held off a RiverHawks' rally to hold on to win 5-4.
Game OneAfter each went down in order in the first, the Lady Lions put two on with one out in the second with singles from
Caitlyn Touchette and
Payton Wilson.
Madison Huot drilled a pitch, but right to the shortstop that resulted in a double play. The RiverHawks also knocked a couple hits, but
Morgan Colvis induced a popup to end the two-out threat.
After allowing a lead-off walk, Colvis would get the next two outs on a sacrifice bunt and fly out. An error by
Margaret Mikecin kept the inning alive, and then Colvis threw a wild pitch to allow Northeastern State to bring across a run to go up 1-0. After another walk and stolen bases, the righty would force a groundout to get out of the inning.
Both teams wasted a lead-off hit in the fourth, as
Adele Linderman doubled to begin the fourth. The RiverHawks put a single through the left side, and then had runners on first and second with nobody out, but a couple popups and a strikeout by Colvis ended the inning still down 1-0.
The RiverHawks added two more runs in the fifth. After loading the bases with the first three hitters, Colvis struck out a NSU batter. However, a walk to the next hitter and a sacrifice fly would increase the NSU lead to 3-0.
Rebecca Stocker led off the sixth with a single, but another unfortunate hard-hit ball right at someone haunted the Lady Lions as
Brooklyn Sisk lined into a double play. Linderman and
Alexis Theis reached with two outs, and Touchette stayed hot and singled to left field to score Linderman and cut into the RiverHawks' lead. Northeastern State would get the run back in its half of the sixth, however, when a double brought home a run to make the score 4-1 heading into the seventh.
Huot would find green to lead off the inning as she doubled to left field. Pinch-hitter
Maria Tippit also singled to left, putting runners on the corners with nobody out. After Stocker lined out to right field, Sisk reached on an error that scored Huot. Linderman would pop-up, but Theis walked to load the bases. Touchette also drew a walk to score Tippit and make the score 4-3. Still with the bases loaded, pinch-hitter
Brooke Tiehes hit a hard ground ball to second base to end the threat and the game.
Game TwoThe Lady Lions began the scoring in the second game in the second inning. Tippit walked to lead off the inning, and
Madeline Bohr would single down the left-field line to bring home the first run of the game.
Bethany Fountain retired the next six hitters to get the Lindenwood offense back to the batter's box.
Once again, Tippit would lead off the fourth with a base knock. Bohr would strike again when she singled up the middle after
Morgan Brown reached on an error. With the bases loaded, Stocker hit a ball through the right side that would score a pair of runs to give the Lady Lions a 3-0 lead.
After Touchette reached on a fielder's choice and stolen second base, Huot singled up the middle to score Touchette. Bohr recorded her third hit of the game when she singled up the middle, scoring Huot after an error on the play. Up 5-0. Fountain worked around a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth to keep the score at 5-0 heading into the sixth.
After giving up a lead-off single to start the sixth, Fountain quickly got two outs. The RiverHawks would get on the board with a two-run blast just down the left-field line to cut into the Lindenwood lead and make it 5-2. After stranding pinch-runner
Kourtney Bunselmeyer, the Lady Lions went into the bottom of the seventh with a three-run lead.
The RiverHawks loaded the bases with one out, then brought in two runs on a single up the middle. Fountain would be relieved by
Brooke Miller, who would walk the first hitter she faced. Now with the bases loaded again with one out, Miller induced a popup and flyout to earn the save and salvage a win on the road trip.
Bohr was three-for-four in game two with three singles and a run batted in, while Touchette and Tippit had three knocks on the day. Touchette also drove in a pair of runs, while Sisk had two doubles in game two. Fountain earned her third win of the season, while Miller earned the first save of the season for the team.
The split brings Lindenwood's record to 6-18 on the season, and a 3-5 mark within the MIAA. Northeastern State moves to 15-12, and also 3-5 in conference. The Lady Lions hit the road again next weekend as they travel to Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State for a doubleheader on Friday and Saturday.
