The No. 3 ranked Lindenwood women's lacrosse team defeated the Colorado Mesa Mavericks 24-16 in an RMAC contest from Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo.
The Lady Lions opened the scoring early in the first half, as
Rachel Benzing found the back of the cage just 1:33 into the action. Colorado Mesa would even the score 34 seconds later, as Olivia Hayden tallied an unassisted goal. Lindenwood would then rattle off three consecutive goals over a 2:41 span, as
Sarah Cromer scored twice and
Morgan Judd scored once. Trailing 4-1, the Mavericks used a free position goal from Lydia Furrow to make the score 4-2 and pull within two goals of the Lady Lions. Lindenwood responded with four unanswered scores, growing its lead to 8-2. The Lady Lions received goals from
Amanda Schimpke, Judd, and Benzing, with Schimpke scoring twice. The Lady Lions would outscore the Mavericks 3-2 over the final 10:24, as Benzing,
Jordyn Constance and
Allison Hurley notched the Lindenwood scores. Lindenwood outshot Colorado Mesa 20-9 during the first half, and headed into halftime with an 11-4 lead.
The Mavericks began the second half outscoring the Lady Lions 5-2 over the opening 9:48 of play. Hurley and Schimpke recorded the goals for Lindenwood, as its lead shrunk to 13-9. The Lady Lions responded with a 6-1 run of their own, surging ahead by a score of 19-10. The Mavericks would tally three of the next four goals, pulling within seven goals of Lindenwood. That however would be as close as Colorado Mesa would come for the remainder of the game, as Lindenwood outscored the Mavericks by a total of 4-3 over the final 5:45 of play. When the final whistle blew, the scoreboard favored the Lady Lions 24-16.
The Lady Lions led the Mavericks in shots (41-29), ground balls (21-18), and draw controls (23-19). The Lady Lions were 15-18 on their clear attempts, while the Mavericks finished the game 17-21.
In goal for Lindenwood,
Delaney Solomon made the start, turning in five saves en route to her fourth win of the season. Judd led the way for the Lady Lions with a team-high four ground balls.
Erin Abbott secured a team-leading nine draw controls, while also having a team best three caused turnovers.
The 24 goals scored was a season-high for Lindenwood, and the most goals they have scored since March 8, 2015 when they scored 25 goals versus Colorado State-Pueblo. The Lady Lions had nine different players record points, and eight different players score goals. Lindenwood also boasted four different players with at least five points, led by Benzing's total of six.
Following the 24-16 victory, the No. 3 ranked Lady Lions improve to 8-0 on the season and 3-0 in RMAC play. With the loss, the Mavericks move to 3-2 on the year, and 0-1 in conference action. Lindenwood will return to Hunter Stadium on March 20 for a non-conference showdown with the No. 12 ranked Limestone Saints.
