Lindenwood's tennis teams clashed in a match against William Woods of the NAIA on Monday night at the Lindenwood tennis courts. The men nearly pulled out the win, but fell one match short. The women lost against the No. 19-ranked team in the NAIA by a final score of 7-2.
The men almost went up 2-1 after doubles, but No. 3 was a hard-fought battle by
Anvar Akhmetov and Antoine Barraud that turned into a 9-7 nail-biting defeat.
Filip Bogic and
Naoufal El Idrissi took down their opponents at No. 1 by a score of 8-2 for their third win as a tandem.
In singles, Bogic put on another dominating display of tennis as he had little trouble winning by a final score of 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1. That marked as his fifth win in a row. El Idrissi joined him as the two Lions to win both of their matches today, defeating his opponent at No. 2 with a 6-4, 6-4 straight-setter.
Slobodan Bavrlic won his second match in a row at No. 6 with a final of 7-5, 6-3. Both of his victories were in straight sets. Barraud split sets at No. 5, but lost a close third set 6-4.
On the women's side,
Anna Barbasheva was the common denominator of the two Lady Lion victories. She paired up with
Gloria Marras at No. 1 doubles and defeated their opponents 8-4 then won her singles match 6-0, 6-0. The Lady Lions lost two third set-tiebreakers in singles at No. 2 and No. 6. Marras won the first set 6-4 at No. 2, but fell 10-6 in the tie-break.
Alexis McCarthy, who played in her first singles match of the spring, competed down to the wire in a match that could have gone either way. She barely fell short in the super-tiebreaker by an astonishing score of 14-12.
After the losses, the men fall to 4-4 on the season while the women become 6-2. They will take on MIAA rivals Washburn on Saturday, March 26. The first matches will start 1 pm at the Lindenwood tennis courts.
