The Lindenwood softball team capped off the 2016 season on senior day with a doubleheader sweep of Central Missouri on Saturday afternoon from St. Charles, Mo. Seniors
Morgan Colvis and
Brooke Miller were credited with the win in their respective game, as
Alexandra Newcomb had two hits on the day while
Mallory Eitel had four.
Game One
After Ali Jo Rogers reached on an error to lead off the game for the Jennies, a steal of second put her in scoring position to score on a single up the middle by Emily King to give the visitors the early lead.
The Lady Lions wouldn't be phased.
Brooklyn Sisk was hit by a pitch and
Madeline Bohr followed with a bunt single. With one out, Newcomb singled through the right side to load the bases.
Alexis Theis drew a walk to even the score at one apiece, and
Caitlyn Touchette followed with a sacrifice fly to score Bohr.
Back-to-back doubles from Hailey Crabtree and King tied the game for UCM in the third, but Colvis got a strikeout and groundout to end the inning to limit the damage. Eitel tied the game in the bottom of the third with a two-out infield single to score Touchette and give Lindenwood the 3-2 lead.
Madison Huot added onto the Lady Lions' lead in the fourth when she doubled home Sisk, who singled and stole second to lead off the inning.
Colvis sent down six in a row before the sixth inning, but UCM would end it there. Loading the bases with nobody out, Colvis surrendered a double to pinch-hitter Allie Dishinger to the game at four to head into the seventh. Lauren Mabe put the Jennies ahead 5-4 with a double down the left-field line to score Crabtree.
A single by Touchette to lead off the seventh for Lindenwood preceded a double to the right-field fence for
Maria Tippit to put runners in scoring position with nobody out. Eitel bunted to reach first, and then
Rebecca Stocker reached on an error by the first baseman, which scored Touchette. On the second pitch of the at-bat, Sisk drilled a deep fly ball to left-center for a sacrifice fly to score pinch-runner
Shelby Sharpe to win the game for the Lady Lions 6-5.
Colvis ends her career with a 2016 record of 8-13 and 90 strikeouts. She led the team with 132 innings pitched and a 4.45 ERA. Newcomb collected one hit, and Eitel had two infield singles. Â
Game Two
The Lady Lions scored two in the first inning to give senior
Brooke Miller an early lead to work with. After Sisk walked, Bohr reached on a bunt and trotted all the way to third after an error. Huot doubled home Bohr to give Lindenwood a 2-0 lead.
The Jennies threatened in the second as they drew three walks, but Miller recorded a strikeout to end the inning.
After scoring one in the third, the Lady Lions added four runs in the fourth. Three consecutive singles resulted in Eitel scoring, followed by a Newcomb knock and a Theis double to bring the score to 7-0 after four innings.
UCM put a four-spot on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. After Miller allowed three runs on four hits,
Bethany Fountain came in relief for the senior. The Jennies tacked on another run from a double by King to only trail 7-4.
Fountain recorded the last two outs of the sixth, but surrendered a lead-off double to Mabe to begin the seventh.
Payton Wilson came in for the save opportunity, and recorded the first out after a UCM runner slid past third base after a successful steal. Wilson quickly got two flyouts to Theis in right field to give the Lady Lions the win to end the 2016 season.
Miller won her first game of the year, going 5.1 innings. Eitel tallied another two hits in game two, as Newcomb also had one.
Lindenwood ends its season with a record of 15-37, along with a 9-17 mark within the MIAA.
