Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Roberts Scores Overtime Goal To Seal Win For Lady Lions Over Concordia

After Mary McGilvray surrendered an early goal, Tayler Heinemeier tallied the equalizer late in the second half before Becky Roberts sealed the season-opening victory for the Lindenwood women's soccer team over Concordia, St. Paul on Friday afternoon from Hunter Stadium.

The beginning of the first half played like a stale mate as the Lady Lions and the visiting Golden Bears exchanged possessions for the first 30 minutes. Jackie Lindner was able to get off a couple attempts at the opposing goalkeeper, but could not put one past her.

In the 32nd minute, Concordia used a corner kick to gain the 1-0 advantage. Mary Kaiser found the head of Jade Weller, who just slipped it by McGilvray.

The Lady Lions controlled most of the second half, as Payton Williams recorded three shots on goal and Alyssa Houck getting a few chances of her own. Early in the second half, Roberts had space by the post and centered it to Taylor Wade, but the Concordia keeper knocked it away.

In the 67th minute, Williams drilled a kick from the corner that was blocked away, but right to Heinemeier just outside the 18-yard box, who drilled it to the back of the net to even the score at one apiece.

After a couple yellow cards were given to each team, Concordia gave itself a couple opportunities to take the lead once again, but new-goalkeeper Lauren Greenstein stood tall in the net.

The Golden Bears carried their momentum into the first overtime, but the Lindenwood defense bent just enough to hold off the attack. Then in the 106th minute, Houck found Roberts sprinting across midfield, who dribbled it by a defender and shot it to the far post just past the outstretched arms of the Concordia keeper to win the game for the Lady Lions.

With the 2-1 victory, Lindenwood begins its season 1-0-0. The Lady Lions will look to ride their momentum into Sunday afternoon when they battle the Maryville Saints in St. Louis, Mo. at 5 p.m.
