Game Recap: Field Hockey (Discontinued) |

Field Hockey Tallies Seven More Goals to Extend Winning Streak to Three

The Lindenwood field hockey team blanked Belmont Abbey for the second time this season after six different players scored a total seven goals on Friday. The victory marked as not only their third win in a row, but their third shutout in a row.

During the first four minutes of play, both teams exchanged possession of the ball four different times before Nicole Johnston intercepted a pass on Belmont Abbey's side of the field. She dribbled five yards then launched a 15-yard pass to Tara Robben who sprinted alone down the field. Robben went around the goalie and scored her tenth goal of the season at the 5:21 mark.

The Lady Lions started to dictate possessions for the entire half including five attempted shots to the Crusaders' none until the 26:46 mark. Robben stole a rare Crusader possession and started a down-the-field break by herself before the Crusaders' goalie slid and stopped Robben. As a result, the goalie fell on the ground which allowed Graycen Dave to take the ball and shot at a wide open net for her second goal of the season.

Just four minutes later, Johnston was guarded by two Crusader defenders that freed up Greta Banholzer for an opportunity to score. Johnston passed to Banholzer and Banholzer slung a missile at the left side of the goal that was completely untouched by the goalie. It was Banholzer's fourth goal of the year that led the Lady Lions into halftime with a 3-0 advantage. Impressively, the Lady Lions did not allow one single shot to the Crusaders in the first half.

The Lady Lions began the second half bolting right out of the gate. Banholzer glided with the ball that drew a couple defenders away from Dave. Banholzer found Dave which led to Dave's second goal of the game and a 4-0 lead at the 36:28 mark.

Virginie Leyssens had possession of the ball after the Crusaders hit it out of bounds on the left side of the field. Leyssens ran into a wall of Crusader defenders and passed the ball right through them. Savannah Motley gathered the ball and took a shot without a defender in her face for the score at the 43:52 mark.

Seven minutes passed as the Lady Lions continued to deny the Crusaders any offensive opportunities. Amelia Rodriguez had a corner opportunity in which she made a perfect pass to Victoria Buysschaert on the left side for an open look at the goal. Buysschaert belted the ball into the goal untouched to give the Lady Lions a six-goal lead. Only a minute passed when the Lady Lions got the ball right back and scored again. Caro Theunisz dribbled the ball close to the right side of the goal-post then passed towards the middle at Bridget Hoogendijk. Hoogendijk shot right into the goal right past the goalie at the 51:19 mark for her fourth goal of the year which leads the Lady Lion freshmen class.

The Crusaders finally got opportunities on offense towards the end as they shot seven times, but four of them were blocked, two were saved, and one went wide. The Lady Lions took the win without having the ball again.

The Lady Lions dominated corner attempts by a 16-4 margin and shots-on-goal by a 14-2 margin. Mackenzie Litterst saw playing time at goalie again as she played in her fifth game this season, saving two shots. Skylar Starbeck played the first 45 minutes of play at goalie before being subbed out.

After improving their record to 6-1, the Lady Lions will play their fourth straight home game on Sunday at 11 am when they take on ECAC-rival Limestone.
