The Lindenwood wrestling team put on a show in the Nebraska-Kearney duals when they took down three schools by at least 12 points each on Saturday. Six different Lions won all of their matches for the day.
Lindenwood vs. Augustana
The Lions opened their day up against No. 18-ranked Augustana.
Carlos Jacquez and
Hunter Haralson contributed victories by decision at 125 and 133 pounds respectively to give the Lions a 6-0 lead.
After Augustana earned a pin at 141 pounds, Ronnie Gentile battled tough at 149 to the point where he needed a sudden victory to win three more points for the Lions. Both Lindenwood and Augustana traded decisions that evened the overall score to 12-12 including a victory from Kyles Jolas at 165 pounds.
Then the momentum would massively favor the Lions once
David Hamil finished. Hamil was assigned against the No. 3-ranked 184-pound wrestler in Division II, Aero Amo, and that did not seem to bother Hamil. The sophomore pulled off the upset by winning a 3-1 decision and, most of all, gave the Lions a three-point lead heading into the 197-pound match.
Dillon Archer clinched the victory for the Lions when he pinned his third opponent of the season, giving the Lions a 21-12 lead with
Jake Borgmeyer lined up at 285.
Borgmeyer, coming off a tightly-contested match against Kevin Barrett of Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday, rebounded with a 3-2 decision win to ice the 24-12 upset-victory over Augustana.
Lindenwood vs. Southwest Minnesota State
After an hour rest, the Lions transitioned their momentum smoothly against Southwest Minnesota State. Not only that, they exhibited pure dominance in their first two matches thanks to Jacquez and Haralson.
Jacquez registered his team-high fifth pin 4:06 into the match followed by a 16-0 technical fall from Haralson to give the Lions an 11-0 edge. Gentile added insurance to Lions' lead when he collected his second decision of the day at 149 pounds.
After dropping the next two matches,
Batchka Zulkhuu, who currently ranks No. 10 in Division II for 174 pounders, took down his opponent by pin to extend the Lions' lead to 20-9. The Lions would then pull away behind Hamil's and Borgmeyer's second decisions of the day each and Archer's second pin of the day to seal the 32-9 win.
Lindenwood vs. Adams State
In pursuit to gather their third victory of the day, the Lions decided to substitute two wrestlers into the lineup at 141 and 174 pounds –
Derek Heil and
Patrick Kristin respectively.
Similarly to the first two duals, the Lions started off with two victories behind Jacquez and Haralson. Jacquez, a freshman standout, added another pin late into the match to give the Lions six points. Haralson, on the other hand, had his hands full as he faced his second top-10 nationally-ranked wrestler in three days – Martin Ramirez, No. 6. Not only did Haralson win, he did not allow a single point in the 2-0 decision.
Gentile garnered his third win of the day when he pinned his opponent 3:26 into the match. It was second fall of the season. The Lions lured off three decisions in a row from Jolas, Kristin, and Hamil to give the Lions a 24-9 lead. Archer then pinned his third opponent of the day which totaled to five for the year. Borgmeyer capped off the Lions' spectacular performance with his third decision, solidifying the 33-9 win over Adams State.
The Lions will return home for a few days before hitting the road again to take on Central Missouri on Wednesday at 7 pm.
