Men's Volleyball Surrenders 2-0 Lead To Lose In Five At Grand Canyon

The Lindenwood men's volleyball team surrendered a 2-0 lead to lose in five sets Saturday night in Phoenix, Ariz. to Grand Canyon University in the finale of the two-match weekend set.

The Antelopes had more kills than Lindenwood in the first set, but attacked at a -.037 clip. The Lions hit .286 that led the way to a dominating 25-14 win. Not much changed in the second set as Lindenwood hit .524 during the frame to lead a commanding 2-0.

Grand Canyon eventually survived a 37-35 third set to force a fourth frame against the Lions. Riding the momentum, the Antelopes won 25-23 to send the match to five sets. Grand Canyon hit .450, despite Lindenwood attacking at a .278 clip to come back to win in five sets.

The Lions hit .286 on the night, led by Jake Duckworth. The senior had 19 kills, hitting for a .277 percentage. Ryan Moore also tallied 11 kills, while Sam Schindler was the third Lion to have double-digit kills.

Adam Brewster accumulated 35 assists on the night, and also led the team with 11 digs. Ryan Vorderer was second with eight digs. Schindler tallied 12 assisted blocks on the night, while Moore and Connor Hipelius had eight apiece. Hipelius had six assisted of his own, while Moore and Blake Koppel combined for nine total blocks. Moore and Schindler combined for six service aces on the night to have the majority of the team's eight.

The Lions dominated the net presence, totaling 24 blocks to Grand Canyon's eight. Head coach Kris Dorn mentioned the domination at the net, but how it isn't the reason why Lindenwood failed to finish the 2-0 lead.

"When we maintained our rhythm, we rarely got stopped. However, we gave the chances in the third set when we should have closed the door," Dorn said.

"In the end, we swayed from our plan of success slightly and opened the door."

With the loss, Lindenwood falls to 0-5 on the young season, now seeing four matches head to five sets. The Lions head to Lebanon, Ill. to battle McKendree Wednesday for a 7 p.m. start time. Lindenwood will look to find its first win of the season.
