Strong Second Half Boosts No. 5 Women’s Lacrosse to Victory at No. 6 Rollins

The fifth-ranked Lindenwood women's lacrosse team cruised to a 16-8 victory versus the No. 6 ranked Rollins Tars on Sunday afternoon from Winter Park, Fla. The victory was highlighted by a second half that saw Lindenwood outscore Rollins by a margin of 9-1. 
 
Lindenwood's Carly Fedorowski opened the afternoon's scoring with an unassisted score 71 seconds into the match, giving the Lady Lions an early 1-0 advantage. For Fedorowski, the goal was the first of her collegiate career.
 
Rollins would respond with two straight scores, grabbing itself a one-goal lead.
 
The Lady Lions continued the back-and-forth trend of the first half, tallying two consecutive scores, to reestablish a 3-2 lead. Maria Johnson and Allison Hurley were credited with the Lindenwood goals. Sophie Buelow dished out the assists on both Lady Lion scores.
 
Rollins controlled the action for the next stretch, scoring three consecutive times to take a 5-3 lead with 4:30 remaining in the half.
 
Lindenwood closed out the first half by outscoring Rollins, 4-2, as the teams headed into the halftime intermission. Buelow scored two of the Lindenwood goals, while Hurley and Rachel Benzing each found the back of the cage once.
 
Rachel Ortell ended the first frame with five saves.
 
The Lindenwood offense exploded to open the second half outscoring Rollins, 6-0 over the first 12:53 of play, to take a commanding 13-7 lead. Johnson began the scoring attack for the Lady Lions, scoring just 18 seconds into the second half. Morgan Judd followed with a goal exactly two-minutes into the second period. Johnson would notch two of the next four Lindenwood goals, while Hurley and Buelow each had one.
 
Rollins would score its first and only goal of the half at the 17:07 mark, putting an end to the Lindenwood spurt, and bringing the score to 13-8 in favor of the Lady Lions.
 
Lindenwood would reestablish its six-goal lead 74 seconds later, as Benzing scored her second goal of the game, moving the Lady Lions in front 14-8.
 
Hannah Doughty and Sarah Goetz would tack on two more scores for the Lady Lions, bringing the game to its final score of 16-8.   
 
Ortell made seven second-half saves, finishing the game with 12 stops in the cage for Lindenwood.
 
Lindenwood held the edge in shots on goal, 30-20. The Lady Lions also had the advantage in groundballs, 18-12. Each team secured 13 draw controls.
 
The victory, which improved Lindenwood to 2-0 on the season, was tied for the highest-ranked victory in program history. Lindenwood's last win over a team ranked as high as No. 6 came on May 9, 2015 against then ranked No. 6 Florida Southern in the NCAA quarterfinals.
 
No. 5 Lindenwood will return to action on February 26 for its home-opening game against the defending National Champions, No. 1 Florida Southern. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m. from Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo.
