Softball Loses to Lewis on Final Day of Rosemont Invite, 10-6

Seniors Lexi Theis and Brooke Tiehes had two hits each.

The Lindenwood softball team struck first on Sunday morning against Lewis on the final day of the Rosemont Dome Invitational, but the host school put up a pair of crooked numbers to stave off a comeback attempt to win, 10-6. Lexi Theis had two hits on the day and three runs batted in, including a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning. Fellow senior Brooke Tiehes followed up a two-hit performance against Winona State yesterday with another dual-knock game. Each game of the three-day invitational was held in Rosemont, Ill., where the NPFL Chicago Bandits play their home games.

Stormee Galka got the start in the circle against the Flyers. The southpaw retired six of the first seven hitters she faced before being chased in the third inning when she allowed the first five batters to reach base. Freshman Kimberly Fozzard entered in relief and allowed a pair of inherited runners to score before allowing a run of her own, but a six-run third inning for Lewis gave it a 6-2 lead heading into the bottom half.

The Lady Lions answered back. Theis drove in her third run of the game when she singled Maddie Bohr home, who led off the frame with a triple to left-center field. Both Theis and Morgan Brown would come around to score on a wild pitch after each moved up on the previous pitch when the Lewis starting pitcher threw a wild pitch. Becca Stocker would eventually walk, but the damage was halted to a 6-5 Lindenwood deficit.

Fozzard drove in Galka in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, but Lewis kept the hit parade alive in its next two at-bats scoring four more runs to lead 10-6. In the home half of the seventh inning, Theis and Austine Pauley walked, but Pauley would be caught stealing the pitch before Madi Huot drew a free pass. With two outs, Galka grounded out to the shortstop to end the threat and game simultaneously.

Galka (1-2), starting her third game in three days, was credited with a no-decision, while Fozzard (2-3) was hit with the loss. The team drew eight walks on the day, including two from Brown and Stocker, to go along with nine hits.

Lindenwood went 2-3 on the weekend in Rosemont, earning victories on the first day against GLIAC schools Findlay and Walsh. Brown led the team with a .462 batting average and .588 on-base percentage in 17 plate appearances over the five games, while Huot recorded seven hits for 10 total bases. Fozzard and Galka each earned a win inside the circle, while the lefty struck out 13 opposing hitters.

The Lady Lions will play their first home games of 2017 next weekend when they host GLVC Wisconsin-Parkside. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday Lou Brock Sports Complex, while the two will play a double header on Sunday beginning at noon.
