Lions Lose To No. 10 Loyola In Four Sets

Lindenwood lost its first match of back-to-back contests against top-10 opponents.

The Lindenwood men's volleyball team won the third set after dropping the first two, but eventually would fall in four frames to No. 10 Loyola on Friday evening. The Lions fell 17-25, 15-25, 25-22, 23-25 to the Ramblers in Chicago, Ill. to begin the conference season 0-5.

Blake Koppel led the Lions attacking at a .412 clip, along with adding 10 kills. Koppel also tallied three digs. Nathan Van Dellen totaled 12 kills.

Joseph Mayer had a season-high 40 assists on the team's 49 kills, while Adam Brewster had five dimes. Mayer also had three digs, while Brewster had one.

Sam Schindler had eight kills on the evening after consecutive 16-kill performances. The freshman had five blocks and two total blocks.

Each of Van Dellen, Vorderer, and Michael Chard had six digs to lead the team, while Rob Chatterton, Koppel, and Mayer combined for nine.

Lindenwood hit .057 and .037 in the first and second set, respectively, before totaling 16 kills and a .386 attack percentage in the third-frame victory. The Lions toned down the service errors with only 13 in the four sets, one less than Loyola, but had four receiving errors to the Ramblers none. Head coach Kris Dorn knew consistency was the key with this team, and needs more effort like the team gave in the third frame.

"We have to come out like we did in game three," Dorn said. "If we we can start a match like that, then we can afford a close loss like set four and still have time to rebound."

The Lions begin the 2017 season 0-8, with five consecutive losses in MIVA action. Lindenwood looks to shake off the loss in the first match of the road trip as it heads to Romeoville, Ill. to battle No. 8 Lewis on Saturday night.
