No. 5 Lewis Takes Down Men's Volleyball In Four Sets

Hipelius hit .300 on the night with eight kills.

The Lindenwood men's volleyball team hung around on Thursday night against No. 5 Lewis, but eventually the Flyers would take down the Lions in four sets from Hyland Arena.

The Flyers hit .370 in the first set to outlast the Lions 25-21, before dropping the second frame in extra points. Knotted at one set apiece, Lewis controlled the third set and took advantage of Lindenwood errors to win the fourth frame, 25-23. The first set involved nine ties and two lead changes, while the second frame went back and forth with six lead changes and 14 ties. Overall, the score was tied 35 times with the lead changing hands 10 times.

Head coach Kris Dorn looked at this match from both sides, seeing the negative, but turning it into a positive. "We still have a slight tendency to lose focus and not make quick adjustments," Dorn said.

"[But] we're starting to believe that we can beat these teams no matter the ranking."

Connor Hipelius and Sam Schindler each had 12.5 points on the night. Hipelius attacked at a .300 clip, recording eight kills, and was in on six blocks, including the lone solo stop for Lindenwood. In total, the team posted nine blocks. The freshman Schindler had nine killls with a .368 attack percentage, while leading the team with two service aces.

Blake Koppel led the team with 11 kills while recording a double-double with 11 digs. Nathan Van Dellen led the team with 15 digs.

After being named the MIVA Offensive Player of the Week averaging 11.22 assists/set last weekend, Adam Brewster tallied 34 dimes in the four sets. The sophomore also recorded a pair of kills and nine digs. Libero Ryan Vorderer had eight digs.

"We can and need to do the little things that pay off over time," Dorn concluded.

Lindenwood drops to 1-14 on the season, and 1-9 in MIVA action. The Lions will host No. 9 Loyola on Saturday afternoon. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Hyland Arena.
