Theis Homers, Drives In Three As Softball Loses At Washburn

Theis drilled her first homer of the season during the fifth inning in the nightcap.

The Lindenwood softball team lost a pair of games on Sunday afternoon in Topeka, Kan. to MIAA foe Washburn. Two late runs in the sixth inning pushed the Icabods past the Lady Lions in game one before the home team used a three-run first inning in the nightcap to complete the sweep.

Lexi Theis drove in three of Lindenwood's five runs on the day, including her first home run of the season in game two's loss. Austine Pauley also homered while collecting three hits between the two games.

Game One

Kimberly Fozzard got the start for the first game, and retired six of her first opposing batters.

The Lady Lions scored the day's first run in the top of the third inning after consecutive singles by Pauley and Maria Tippit. Hannah Johnson drew a walk to load the bases before Theis drove in the run when she reached on a fielder's choice. The Ichabods got the run back immediately in their half of the third when Megan Stegman drilled a home run to even the score.

Fozzard sent down 10 of the next 13 before Washburn would take the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning. A pair of singles and a free pass gave Washburn its second run of the game before an error allowed the Ichabods to score again via a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-1.

Pauley had two knocks for the game, while Tippit, Johnson, and Brooke Tiehes each had one. The freshman righty surrendered seven hits and issued one walk in the loss as she dropped to 4-7 on the season.

Game Two

Pauley led off the nightcap with a shot to the opposite field to spark the Lindenwood offense early. However, freshman Stormee Galka allowed a Washburn three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to put Lindenwood down 3-1 after one.

Theis drove in her second run of the day in the top of the second inning when she singled home Galka. The Lady Lions evened the score when Madi Huot crossed the plate as Theis was caught stealing second just after the senior scored.

The score held until the fourth inning when the Ichabods took advantage of another Lady Lions' error to begin the frame. After a wild pitch, Galka allowed a single to give Washburn the lead. An error on the play sent her to third base, as she would score on a sacrifice two batters later.

Theis homered to cut the lead in half in the fifth inning, but that would be the last Lindenwood threat of the game as Washburn held on to win 5-4.

Galka went the distance in the loss that put her at 5-6 on the season. The southpaw struck out five while walking one. Theis had two hits, while Pauley and Tiehes recorded the other two for Lindenwood.

The sweep sends Lindenwood to 9-13 on the season, and 0-6 to begin conference play. The Lady Lions will welcome Illinois-Springfield on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. first pitch from Lou Brock Sports Complex.
