The Lindenwood softball team salvaged its weekend with a 2-1 victory in the nightcap against Northeastern State on Saturday afternoon from Lou Brock Sports Complex. The visiting RiverHawks defeated the Lady Lions in game one, 10-2.Â
Hannah Johnson collected three hits on the day, including two in the victory. The freshman doubled and scored in game one.
Stormee Galka struck out seven and allowed six hits for the win, her seventh victory of the season.
Adele Linderman and
Bethany Fountain each had a pair of hits in game two, while seven different players tallied a knock in the first game.Â
Game One
Defense played an important role on the day, but especially in the first inning. The first two outs recorded by
Kimberly Fozzard were diving plays by Linderman in left field. The RiverHawks failed to score in the inning, but exploded for six runs in the second frame. NSU's Carlee Gann hit her first homer of the game to make the score 5-0, which followed with two more hits and a sacrifice fly to increase the Lindenwood deficit to six.Â
Northeastern State added two more runs in the fourth inning, and another pair in the fifth on Gann's second home run.
Fozzard had the first Lindenwood hit with two outs in the third inning, but the offense wouldn't score until the fourth inning. With one out, Johnson ripped a double to left-center field, allowing
Lexi Theis to drive her in with a single of her own.Â
Fountain and
Austine Pauley singled in the fifth inning, but the score would hold at 10-1 for the Northeastern State victory in five innings.Â
Game Two
Galka paced the momentum early on in game two. The southpaw punched out five of the first nine outs before the Lady Lions scored in the third inning.Â
Pauley hit a ball of the top of the fence in center field for a triple to lead off the inning, and Linderman followed up with a single up the middle to drive the freshman in to score. After Galka retired the side in order in the fifth inning, the offense added another run. Linderman began with a single before Johnson moved her to third on a knock of her own. Theis grounded out to score Linderman as the Lady Lions went up 2-0.Â
The RiverHawks cut the lead in half in their half of the sixth inning, but Galka induced four consecutive popups to end the game.Â
The split brings Lindenwood to 11-17 on the year and 2-10 in MIAA action. The Lady Lions battle Fort Hays State on Tuesday from Lou Brock Sports Complex for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
