The No. 15-ranked Lindenwood men's lacrosse team closed out the regular season with a 14-4 victory over Maryville on senior night on Friday from Hunter Stadium.
In the first quarter, the Lions' offense shut down the Saint as they tallied four total goals including a man-up opportunity.
Sean Darroch started the scoring off with a goal just two minutes into the game followed up by an unassisted goal from
Sam Heaton at the 8:43 mark. Heaton struck again after taking full advantage of a Saint penalty with 50 seconds remaining in the quarter and scored his sixth man-up goal of the season. The Lions scored one more time thanks to senior
Spencer Elmore, who recorded his first goal of the season with 27 seconds left.
The scoring trend continued for the Lions into the second quarter, shutting out the Saints by a 5-0 margin. Both
Leonard Jones and
Kevin Eskridge, another senior, registered two goals each in which
Max Troha and senior
Connor Laird assisted once each. Senior
Kyle Lee also made his mark on the game by posting a goal at the 9:08 mark in the quarter to give the Lions a 9-0 lead. The Lions' offense quieted for the remainder of the half.
The Saints attacked first in the second half as they notched two goals of their own within 1:30 of each other midway through the quarter. Then Lee continued to shine on his senior night by scoring his second goal of the game at the 6:14 mark followed by a goal from
Cole Trullender at the 2:09 mark to give the Lions a 11-2 lead heading into the final quarter.
Like the quarter before, the Saints scored the first two goals, but were then slowed down by the Lions' offensive attack.
Garrett Brunsvold found the back of the net at the 6:13 mark followed by Lee's third and final goal of the game at the 3:42. Senior
David Corazalla delivered the final blow with two seconds left after gliding through a successful for an easy score to seal the game.
The Lions outshot the Saints by a 61-28 margin while allowing just 10 turnovers to Maryville's 22.
Tyler Schermann dominated his faceoffs, converting 13 of 18 chances while picking up six groundballs. All three goalies for the Lions -
Ben Besancenez,
Aaron Wiederhoeft, and
Landon Schuster - saw playing time for the final game of the regular season.
Fellow seniors were honored for their final contest - Eskridge, Corazalla, Schermann, Lee, Elmore, Laird,
Josh Coons,
Michael Proskey, and
Steven Tusing,
The Lions conclude their season with an overall record of 10-4.
