The Lindenwood baseball team picked up its second-consecutive win in the MIAA Tournament with a 6-1 victory over Missouri Western in Joplin, Mo. on Friday.
Â
Andrew Eilers fed off the pitching success from
Brendan Feldmann the day before and registered is first complete game of the season. Eilers pitched with a purpose as he allowed just four hits and struck out seven batters for his seventh win of the season.Â
Sam Baxter had a great all-around game as he led the squad with three hits and made a clutch play at third base to end an offensive threat by the Griffons.
Â
Wes Degener opened the scoring with a single to centerfield that allowed Baxter to cross the plate.Â
Kyle Teter continued to swing the bat well as he blasted a two-run home run with the wind against him to give Lindenwood a 3-0 lead after four innings. Baxter hit a triple to start the fifth inning and
Paul Sherwood hit a single through the right side to build on the lead.
Â
The Lions added insurance runs late on an-RBI single by
Drew Quinones in the seventh and another RBI-single by Sherwood in the eighth. The Griffons scored their only run in the bottom of the eight, but a phenomenal play by Baxter stopped Missouri Western immediately. The Lions outhit the Griffons 14-4 while eight of the nine Lindenwood batters registered at least one hit.
Â
Lindenwood improves to 33-17 on the year while the Griffons drop to 30-19 on the season. The Lions will play at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in Joplin, Mo. against the winner of game 10 which will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
