The magic continues for the Lindenwood baseball after it scored three runs in the final inning to defeat St. Cloud State 10-8 on Sunday in Emporia, Kan. to advance to the Central Regional Championship Game.
Â
Lindenwood saw its 6-0 diminish to an 8-7 deficit heading into the top of the ninth, but the Lions scored three runs on two hits to take a two run lead and
Connor Law shut the door for his 12th save of the season.Â
Drew Quinones was a big part of the ninth-inning rally as he ended the day with three runs and two hits while
Paul Sherwood led the squad with three RBI.
Â
The Lions scored the first run of the game in the top of the second after
Rayce Singbush hit a one-out single to left field and drove in Quinones. Lindenwood put together a big inning in the third frame that began with a
Wes Degener double down the right field line.Â
Tyler Muehling drove in Degener on a double of his own to make it a 2-0 ballgame.Â
Ryan Sosnowski hit a single up the middle and moved to second on the throw. Quinones drove in Muehling on a single through the right side and Sherwood drove in a pair on a single up the middle as Lindenwood held a 6-0 lead.
Â
St. Cloud State began to chip away at the Lindenwood lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but
Sam Baxter hit an RBI double in the top of the fifth to put it back to a six-run ball game. The Huskies compiled six runs in two innings to tie the game at 7-7 after six innings and took the lead in the seventh with an RBI single.
Â
The Lions stayed focused and Quinones opened the top of the ninth with a double down the right field line.Â
Kyle Teter hit a fly ball deep enough to get Quinones to third with just one out and a chance to tie the game.Â
Conor Behrens drew a walk and Singbush hit a ball to third base for a potential game-ending double play, but an errant throw allowed Quinones to cross the play and tie the game at 8-8. Baxter executed a hit-and-run perfectly to bring in Behrens and put Singbush at second base with two outs. Sherwood drove in Singbush on a single as the Lions held a 10-8 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth and Law shut the Huskies down.
Â
Lindenwood improves to 38-18 while the Huskies fall to 41-18 on the season. The Lions will advance to the Central Regional Championship Game on Monday at 11 a.m. in Emporia, Kan.Â
