Women’s Lacrosse Suffers Season’s First Loss in RMAC Championship Game

The Lindenwood women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon in the RMAC Tournament Championship game. The Lady Lions dropped the RMAC Tournament Championship game to the Regis Rangers by a final score of 13-11 from Denver, Colo.

Regis scored early to take a 1-0 lead just 58 seconds into the game. Lindenwood responded by rattling off the next four scores, building itself a three-goal lead with 24:26 remaining in the half. Allison Hurley netted the first goal of the afternoon for Lindenwood on a free position attempt. Maria Johnson, Morgan Judd, and Hannah Doughty followed the Hurley goal to complete the Lady Lion scoring stretch.

Regis would answer the Lindenwood run by scoring three of the next four goals, trimming the Lindenwood lead to 5-4 with 13:27 showing on the clock. Carly Fedorowski scored the lone Lindenwood goal during the Regis run.

Sophie Buelow scored a free-position goal with 12:01 to play in the half, the first of four consecutive goals for Lindenwood. Doughty followed with her second score of the afternoon nearly three minutes later, before Cassie Stucklen and Rachel Benzing capped the run for the Lady Lions. The four-goal stretch helped Lindenwood grow its lead to 9-4 with just over five minutes to play in the first half.

Regis notched the final two scores of the half, bringing the score to 9-6 in favor of Lindenwood as the teams entered halftime.

Regis scored the first six goals of the second half to take a commanding 12-9 lead. Lindenwood's first second-half score came with just over eight minutes remaining in the contest. Buelow's second goal of the game would put an end to the Regis scoring run, and helped to draw Lindenwood within two goals of Regis.

Each team would tack on one more goal before time expired, bringing the game to its final score of 13-11 in favor of Regis.

Rachel Ortell took her first loss of the season in goal for Lindenwood, bringing her record to 13-1 on the season. Ortell finished the game with seven saves.

Buelow finished the game with three goals and two assists to pace the Lady Lions.

Lindenwood won 14 draw controls, and was led by Johnson's total of seven.

Judd caused a team-high two turnovers, while Erin Abbott scooped up a team-leading two ground balls.

Following the loss, Lindenwood moves to 20-1 on the season. The Lady Lions will await the announcement the 2017 NCAA Tournament field tonight at 7:00 p.m. CT to determine their postseason fate.
