The Lindenwood women's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie versus the Minnesota State Mavericks on Saturday evening from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo. Lindenwood scored two power-play goals in the non-conference clash.
Minnesota State scored first for the second-consecutive night, scoring at the 15:12 mark of the opening period. Lindenwood matched Minnesota State in the shots category for the first 20 minutes of play, with each team totaling 11 shots on goal, but headed into the first intermission trailing the Mavericks 1-0.
Minnesota State added to its lead with 4:49 gone by in the middle frame, moving the score to 2-0 in favor of the Mavericks.
A Mavericks slashing penalty late in the second period sent the Lions to power play. With just seven seconds remaining on the two-minute penalty,
Taylor Girard scored her team-leading third goal of the season, bringing the Lions within one goal of the Mavericks. Girard's power-play score came at the 16:28 mark of the period.
Megan Wagner and
Cierra Paisley picked up the assists on the play. For Wagner, the assist was the first point of her collegiate career.
Just 12 seconds after Lindenwood's first goal of the evening, Minnesota State committed a high-sticking penalty, putting the Lions on their third power play of the night. With 27 seconds remaining on the power play
Sierra Burt netted the first goal of her career, drawing Lindenwood even with Minnesota State. Burt's score came at the 18:13 mark of the second period, with Paisley and Girard earning the assists on the play.
The score remained tied for the duration of the second period.
The third period saw even action on both ends of the ice, however, neither team was able to break the tie and the game headed for overtime.
The overtime period consisted of much of the same action as the third period, and the game ended tied at 2-2.
Jolene deBruyn stopped 29 of the 31 shots she faced during the game, including 14 saves during the third period and overtime.
Lindenwood out shot Minnesota State 36-31 for the game, and held a 38-31 edge in the faceoff circle. Paisley won a game-high 16 draws for the Lions.
With the tie, Lindenwood moves to 0-3-1. Lindenwood will next return to the ice for a two-game series with the Mercyhurst Lakers on Oct. 13-14. The series will be held at Lindenwood Ice Arena, with puck drop scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Oct. 13.
