The Lindenwood women's hockey team defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions by a final score of 4-1 on Saturday afternoon from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo.
Kirsten Martin scored twice for the Lions and picked up the game-winning goal.
Lindenwood's
Sierra Burt gave Lindenwood a 1-0 lead just 5:30 into the first period, scoring her sixth goal of the season at even strength.
Mariah Hinds registered her eighth assist of the season on what would prove to be the only goal of the period.
Penn State scored while on the power play at the 2:24 mark of the second period to pull even with Lindenwood.
Just 86 seconds later, Lindenwood regained its one-goal lead, as
Kirsten Martin netted her fourth goal of the year. Martin buried a rebound opportunity after
Christiana von Aulock directed the puck on goal. von Aulock and
Courtney Ganske had the assists on the Lindenwood goal.
With only 87 seconds remaining in the middle frame, Lindenwood extended its lead to two goals, as
Hannah Alt deposited the puck into the back of the net.
Shannon Morris-Reade picked up the lone assist on the play, her fifth of the season. For Alt, the goal was her seventh of the season and her third in Lindenwood's last four games.
Penn State outshot Lindenwood by a 16-5 margin during the final period, however, it was Lindenwood that would score the period's only goal, as the Lions prevailed by a final score of 4-1.
With the Penn State goaltender pulled in the closing minutes for an extra attacker, Martin fired a shot from behind the Lindenwood blue line to record her second goal of the game.
Cierra Paisley and
Sierra Burt had the assists on the final score of the day.
Jolene deBruyn sparkled in net for Lindenwood, stopping 40 shots on the day, including all 16 during the third period. deBruyn's 40-save performance resulted in her fifth win of the season.
Lindenwood scored on one of its three power plays for the game, while Penn State converted on just one of its five chances.
Following the win, Lindenwood improves to 6-13-1 on the season and 4-6-0 during conference play.
Lindenwood will travel to Erie, Pa. for a two-game series with the Mercyhurst Lakers on January 19-20. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET on Friday afternoon, and will be followed by a 2:00 p.m. start time on Saturday afternoon.
