The No. 3 Lindenwood women's lacrosse team secured a 17-9 decision over Colorado Mesa on Friday afternoon from Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo. Five different Lions had multi-goal performances as the team collected its ninth-consecutive victory to open the 2018 season.
Allison Hurley led the team with three assists, and became the program's all-time leader with 92 career assists.
Lindenwood and Colorado Mesa exchanged goals for the opening 20 minutes of play, with each team scoring three times during the back-and-forth action.
Sophie Buelow scored the first two goals of the game for the Lions, and
Carly Fedorowski netted the third score for Lindenwood.
Over the final 9:58 of the first half, Lindenwood outscored Colorado Mesa by a 4-1 margin, and carried a 7-4 lead into halftime.
The Lions continued their dominant offensive play to open the second half, recording six of the first seven goals of the frame, helping to extend their lead to 13-5 with just over 13 minutes left in the game.
Each team would score four more times before time expired, and Lindenwood prevailed by a 17-9 final score.
Rachel Ortell picked up her ninth win of the season in goal for the Lions. Ortell made five saves in the game.
Buelow led all scorers with five goals and six points. Hurley and Fedorowski each totaled five points for the Lions.
Hannah Doughty and
Sami Smit both found the back of the net twice, while
Maria Johnson and
Cassie Stucklen each scored once.
Shannon Modl set new career-highs in draw controls (8) and ground balls (6), leading Lindenwood in both categories. Johnson added four draw controls, and
Alana Jeronimo scooped up four ground balls.
Fedorowski caused a career-high seven turnovers.
With the win, Lindenwood improves to 9-0 and 4-0 in the RMAC. The Lions will return to action on Sunday afternoon against Westminster. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m. from Hunter Stadium.
