The Lindenwood football team (8-3, 7-0 GLVC) won the GLVC Championship outright with a dominating 42-10 victory over Southwest Baptist (3-8, 1-6 GLVC) on Saturday in Bolivar, Mo.
Nash Sutherlin led the Lions with 231 yards on the ground, while
Payton Rose set a new school record with his 15th receiving touchdown on the season.
GAME OVERVIEW
The Lions jumped on the board first with a 12-yard touchdown pass from
Cade Brister to
Najee Jackson at the 10:30 mark of the first quarter. The Bearcats responded with a field goal four minutes later to make it a 7-3 ballgame. Lindenwood picked up the tempo in the second quarter, as Sutherlin tallied his first score of the day to give the Lions a 14-3 lead. After being held without a catch last week,
Erik Henneman scored on his third reception of the game, extending the Lindenwood lead to 18 points.
The Lindenwood defense played a strong first half, as
Tayvian Weary registered two sack in the second quarter alone to keep the Lions ahead 21-3 at the half. The momentum carried over into the first drive of the third quarter, as
Tanner Sobotka and
Arsante Conners tallied a sack on the third play. Sutherlin ran the ball five times on the next drive, scoring on a 38-yard run at the 9:28 mark to make it a 28-3 lead for the Lions.
Southwest Baptist scored its only touchdown of the game on the next drive, going 75 yards in 14 plays. Sutherlin answered with his third touchdown of the day, building the Lindenwood back to 25 points to close out the third quarter. With 10:55 to go in the fourth quarter, Brister his Rose on a 25-yard touchdown pass to give Rose the single-season touchdown receptions record. Rose surpassed Lindenwood Hall of Famer, Andrew Helmick, who set the record in 2012.
The Lions closed out the game with a 42-10 victory, earning the first GLVC Championship in school history, and the first conference championship since the Lions won the HAAC Championship in 2009. Brister is now the program record holder for total yards in a season with 3,746. The O'Fallon, Mo. native is currently tied with Lindenwood Hall of Famer, Philip Staback, in passing touchdowns (36) and most touchdowns responsible for (42) in a season.
