Cassmeyer, Fischer Guide Baseball to MIAA-Opening Win

The Lindenwood baseball team (6-7, 1-0 MIAA) picked up a series-opening victory over Washburn on Friday afternoon from  Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo. The Lions defeated the visiting Ichabods by a final score of 7-2, scoring all seven of their runs with two outs, to earn their first MIAA win of the season.

GAME OVERVIEW
Washburn struck first on Friday afternoon, scoring an unearned run in the top half of the first inning. The Ichabods would hold their one-run lead into the bottom of the third inning.

In the bottom of the third inning, Kolby Schulte singled with one out and remained on first base with two outs. Mitchell Krebs came through with a two-out RBI double in the right-center field, scoring Schulte from first to tie the game at 1-1.

Lindenwood added another two-out run in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Schulte singled home Calvin Nowak.

Washburn threatend in the top of the fifth inning, placing two runners in scoring position with no outs. However, Tyler Cassmeyer quickly shut down the opportunity for the Ichabods, retiring the next three hitters, two of which coming via the strikeout.

The Lions continued their two-out magic in the fifth inning, as Neil Fischer drove a double down the left field line, scoring Nowak and DJ Miller. Fischer's RBI double gave Lindenwood a 4-1 edge.

Cassmeyer exited the game after six innings, striking out six batters, and not allowing an earned run.

Lindenwood added three more two-out runs in the seventh inning, including another two-run RBI double from Fischer.

Eric Hipp logged the final three innings on the mound for the Lions, securing the win for Cassmeyer and also picking up his first save of the season.
