Lindenwood Athletics Announces 2019 Sports Hall of Fame Class

Lindenwood Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Brad Wachler announced the 2019 induction class for the Lindenwood Sports Hall of Fame on Friday. Six individuals, two teams, and one meritorious service award winner will be honored later this fall as they take their place among the University's all-time greats. The 2019 Lindenwood Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held on Friday, November 1 at the J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts.

The six individuals being inducted are Alex Bazzell, Sarah Billiamosa, Pierre Desir, Roger Ellis, Denodus O'Bryant, and Brad Soderberg. Bill Vahle is being honored for meritorious service. The 2010 men's ice hockey team and the 2010 women's hockey team will also be enshrined in the Hall of Fame.

Bazzell was a member of the men's basketball team from 2010-2013. Bazzell finished his Lindenwood career with 1,313 points, the eighth-highest total in program history. The St. Charles, Mo. native averaged 14.8 points per game for his career and ranks first in program history in assists, free throws made, and free throws attempted. Following his sophomore campaign, Bazzell was a third-team all-HAAC selection, and helped Lindenwood advance to the round of 16 at the NAIA National Tournament. As a junior, Bazzell was an all-ICAA selection as he guided Lindenwood to a program-best 28-3 record and an Independent National Championship. Bazzell was tabbed as a second-team all-MIAA performer following his senior season, helping the Lions to a 19-7 record and a third-place finish in the MIAA.

Billiamosa was a member of the women's swimming program from 2008-2012. During her time at Lindenwood, Billiamosa was the team's most dominant and accomplished member. Among her many achievements as a Lion, none are greater than her 2010 NAIA National Championship in the 400 IM. A product of Pearl City, Hawaii, Billiamosa became the program's only individual national champion at the NAIA level. Billiamosa played an integral role in Lindenwood securing four consecutive conference runner-up finishes along with three top-10 team finishes at the NAIA National Championships. Billiamosa was Lindenwood's highest-scorer at nationals during each of her four years as a Lion, and was selected as the team's most valuable performer four times. Billiamosa served as a team captain during her senior season in 2011-2012.

Desir was a member of the football team during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. During his two-year playing career at Lindenwood, Desir was recognized as a two-time AFCA All-American, a two-time all-region performer, and a two-time first-team all-MIAA selection. Following his senior season, Desir won the Cliff Harris Award in 2013 which is given to the nation's top defensive player among the NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA.  A native of St. Charles, Mo., Desir registered 13 interceptions and 30 defended passes in his two seasons as a Lion. Desir owns the single-season program record of nine interceptions, and ranks second all-time in program history with his 13 career interceptions. Desir became the first Lindenwood football player to earn in SPvitations to the Senior Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine, and in May of 2014 he became the first Lion to be selected in the NFL Draft.

Ellis served as the head coach of the men's and women's golf programs for a combined total of over 20 years. Ellis began his tenure with both programs in 1999 and transformed the Lions into a dominant force at the NAIA level. From 1999-2012, Ellis guided the men's program to 12 out of a possible 13 HAAC Championships. The Lindenwood men's team advanced to the NAIA National Championship in all 13 seasons and had six top-15 showings at nationals, including a program-best seventh-place finish in 2007. On the women's side, Lindenwood won nine out of a possible 10 conference titles from 1999-2008. Lindenwood also won three straight titles while Ellis was the program director for the women's program. Ellis' women's teams had three straight top-10 national finishes from 2001-03, including third-place in 2002 and 2003.

O'Bryant was a member of the football team from 2008-2012. Following a redshirt season in 2008, O'Bryant spent the next four seasons building one of the most legendary careers on the gridiron in Lindenwood history. The Washington, Mo. native shattered several program records, finishing his career as the program's all-time leader in total touchdowns, rushing touchdowns, kickoff return touchdowns, rushing yards, all-purpose yards, and rushing attempts. In 2009, O'Bryant tied the NAIA national record with four kickoff return touchdowns in a single season, a feat he accomplished on just 13 return attempts. O'Bryant was a two-time first-team All-American in 2009 and 2010, and was also tabbed as a first-team all-HAAC performer and the HAAC Player of the Year in each of those seasons. In 2009, O'Bryant and the Lions finished with a 13-1 record and advanced to the NAIA National Championship game.

Soderberg was the head coach of the men's basketball team from 2009-2015. In six years as Lindenwood's head coach, Soderberg became the program's all-time winningest head coach with 127 wins and also the all-time leader in winning percentage with a .690 mark. Under the direction of Soderberg, the Lions won at least 17 games in every season but one, which included the program's transition to the NCAA level. In the program's final year in the NAIA in 2010-11, Lindenwood won a HAAC Championship and advanced to the second round of the NAIA Division I National Tournament. Soderberg led Lindenwood to a 28-3 record during its transition season in 2012-13, and achieved school history by winning 20 games for three straight seasons. In three years in the NCAA and MIAA, Soderberg led Lindenwood to 47 victories, and the program finished fourth or better in two of the three seasons.

Vahle came to Lindenwood in the fall of 2004 as an Associate Professor of Management in the School of Business and Entrepreneurship. From 2006-2017, and again in 2019, Vahle served as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis programs. In 2019, Vahle came out of retirement to help lead the tennis programs during a coaching transition. During his 13 seasons as head coach, Vahle won a combined 231 duals between both programs and three conference championships. Vahle was named as the NAIA Regional Women's Coach of the Year for the 2006-07 season. Off the court, Vahle led the program to 73 academic honor roll awards, nine MIAA Scholar-Athlete awards, seven MIAA Academic Excellence honors, and two CoSIDA Academic All-District honors.

The 2010 men's ice hockey team finished with a 42-5-0 record en route to its second ACHA National Championship in as many years. The Lions captured the CSHL regular season and tournament championships during the 2009-2010 campaign, which included a 16-4-0 mark inside conference play. Lindenwood opened the season with 24 consecutive wins, and outscored its opponents by a 164-40 margin in those contests. By the end of the season, the Lions had posted a 27-1-0 record on the road.

The 2010 women's ice hockey team finished with a 43-2-2 record as it claimed its third straight ACHA National Championship and the program's fourth in a five-year span. The Lions secured the CCWHA regular season and tournament championships, highlighted by the team's 12-0-0 record against conference foes.
