Valerie Mamleeva finished fifth in the 116 lb. weight class to earn All-American status at the 2020 Cliff Keen WCWC Women's National Championships March 6-7 at Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan. The Lindenwood sophomore went 5-2 in head-to-head matches as the Lions finished 14
th overall in team competition.
After an opening round bye in a bracket of 20 competitors, Mamleeva lost to Abby Nelson from the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point by technical fall, but won her next four matches to advance to the consolation semifinals. Mamleeva earned a 19-9 decision over Britney Lamey from Emmanuel College, pinned Jezebel Snyder from Augsburg University, stopped Aleena Gomez from Colorado Mesa University by technical fall, and pinned Shanna Morris from Tiffin University, but the winning streak ended against Emily Se from Emmanuel. Mamleeva rebounded to win the fifth place match by pinning Maddie Ruckdashel from Lakeland University.
Several other Lindenwood wrestlers came within one win of making the top eight. In the 109 lb. class,
Angelique Terrones-Cruz lost her first match, but defeated Jocelyne Hernandez from MacMurray College by technical fall before Brooke Thurber from the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point pinned her.
Maya Shimizu lost her first match in the 170 lb. division before pinning Shola Casen from East Stroudsburg University in the first consolation round, but Shimizu was pinned in the next round to end her run. Sebrina Albury also came within one round of making the top eight in the 191 lb. division.
In one of the largest brackets,
Jasmine Ward went 2-2 in four matches among 19 competitors. She earned an 18-10 decision over Isabella Badon from Presbyterian College, and an 18-10 decision over Katelynn Gunderson from Lakeland University. In the largest bracket at the event,
Alexis Altamira earned a win against two losses among 24 different competitors. Her victory came by technical fall against her teammate
Natalie Cregger.
In addition to Kregger in the 130 lb. class,
Kennedy Cox also competed for the Lions in the 143 lb. bracket.
