Wild Comeback For Women's Hockey Falls Short

The Lindenwood women's hockey team (0-6-0, 0-0-0 CHA) put together a furious comeback attempt, scoring five times in the third period, but ultimately fell short in overtime by a score of 7-6 to Minnesota State (5-1-0, 1-1-0 WCHA) on Saturday afternoon from Mankato, Minn.

GAME OVERVIEW
The Lions got off to a slow start, struggling to find any offensive rhythm in the opening period as Lindenwood managed just six shots, including three on goal in the opening frame. Minnesota State took an early lead, finding the back of the net at the 5:15 mark of the first period. Despite the early goal, Emily Finach put together a strong period between the pipes stopping 13 of 14 shots faced, while Lindenwood compiled 16 blocked shots as a team. The Mavericks would take a one goal lead into the first intermission.

Minnesota State got off to an early start in the second frame, adding to its lead less than three minutes into the period. After the goal, Lindenwood got to work offensively, putting the puck towards the net. Gigi Pora would cut the Minnesota State lead in half at the 13:29 mark of the period, netting her first goal of the season, off an assist from Morgan Neitzke. Just 29 seconds later, the Mavericks would regain their two-goal lead at 3-1. Minnesota State would go on to add two more goals late in the period to take a 5-1 advantage into the locker room.

Despite the deficit, Lindenwood kept battling during the third period. The Lions chipped away as Sydney Rarick scored her first colligate goal, making the score 5-2 with just over 15 minutes to play in the third period. Sierra Burt picked up an assist on the goal, one of three helpers for the Bayfield, Ontario native on the day. Less then a minute later, Lindenwood struck again as Valerie Caldwell scored for the second time this season, seeing the score move to 5-3 midway through the final frame. Lindenwood kept the pressure on the Mavericks, scoring again at the 8:21 mark, this time Rachel Goff made it a one goal game, with an assist from Caldwell.  The Lions pushed for the game-tying goal and were able to get it off the stick of Megan Wagner at the 13:21 mark of the final frame, Lindenwood wasn't done, however as exactly two minutes later, Rarick gave the Lions the lead, 6-5 with her second score of the game.

Minnesota State wouldn't go away as the Mavericks were able to tie the game just over a minute later, making the score 6-6. Lindenwood was efficient with its shots in the frame, scoring five time on nine shots on goal, but the game would need overtime.
