Women's Basketball Concludes Regular Season with Overtime Thriller

The Lindenwood women's basketball team (11-9, 11-9 GLVC) closed out the 2020-21 regular season with a thrilling 65-64 overtime win at Indianapolis (11-10, 11-10 GLVC).

In the first half, the Lions shot 37.0 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from deep, and 80.0 percent at the charity stripe. Ellen McCorkle scored a game-high 14 points as Lindenwood entered halftime down, 34-30. Both teams were even on the boards at 18. The Greyhounds tallied nine assists in the first half to the Lions' seven. Lindenwood blocked three shots in the opening 20 minutes of the contest.

The second half saw the Lions outscore their opponent, 30-26, while blocking five total shots. Devin Fuhring was 3-4 at the free throw line as she led the team with nine points. Nicole Hernandez was second with her eight points, as she also blocked four shots, in a game that saw her swat a career-high five shots. From the field, the Lions shot 40.0 percent, while going 12-14 (85.7 percent) at the free throw line.

In a defensive-laden overtime period, Lindenwood held UIndy to four total points, coming away with the 65-64 victory.

INSIDE THE PLAYS
  • Lindenwood opened up the scoring on a three-pointer by Hennessey Handy, assisted from Ellen McCorkle.
  • The Lions' largest lead of the opening period was 12 points, which came on a layup by McCorkle, assisted from Grace Neff.
  • The team entered the second quarter up, 21-10, on the Greyhounds.
  • After leading 27-21, a 6-0 run by UIndy would knot the game up at the 5:00 minute mark in the second period.
  • Indianapolis closed the half out on a 5-0 run to lead at halftime, 34-30.
  • After trailing by seven points early in the fourth quarter, the Lions put together an 11-0 stretch to go up, 58-54.
  • With one second left in the fourth, down by two points, Nicole Hernandez put up the game-tying layup on an inbounds pass from Julia Ruzevich, to will the team to overtime.
  • The Lions' overtime points came on a layup by J. Ruzevich (assisted by Kendra Lee). Lee would follow up with a three-pointer (assisted by J. Ruzevich) to put the game away.
BOX SCORE LEADERS
  • Ellen McCorkle's 19 points paced the Lions in the win.
  • Julia Ruzevich closed out the campaign with a double-double, as she notched a team-high 10 rebounds, to go along with her 10 points.
  • Julia Ruzevich also led the team with six assists.
  • Nicole Hernandez blocked a team-high five shots. As a squad, the Lions tallied 10 total blocks.
  • Julia Ruzevich totaled four steals to lead Lindenwood.
