Baseball Splits Doubleheader on Sunday

The Lindenwood baseball team (1-4) split its doubleheader on Sunday with the University of Mary (1-1).  The Marauders won the first game by a final of 8-2, while the Lions took the second game by an 11-1 margin at Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.

GAME ONE OVERVIEW
The Lions started the day with a run in the first inning on aggressive base running.  After Calvin Nowak walked to start the game, he scored all the way from first base to give Lindenwood a 1-0 lead.  University of Mary picked up three runs in the top of the third, and five more in the fourth to go up by an 8-1 margin.  Michael Ward tripled to left center in the bottom half of the sixth inning, and later score to make it 8-2.  It was too little too late in the first home game of the season, as the Lions fell 8-2.

Michael Ward (1-for-3, 1 R, 1 3B)
Eli Brown (3.2 IP, 2 K, 0 R, 2 H)

GAME TWO OVERVIEW
The Lions came out solid in the second game, which started with quality pitching from Niko Marshall.  A product of Lindbergh High School, Marshall allowed just two hits in the first four innings, as the offense got hot in the bottom half of the fourth.  Kolby Schulte started the rally with a double down the left field line, and scored on a single by Ward.  The Lions put the ball in play, which led to a couple of error by the Marauders to increase the lead.  Nowak drove in a pair of runs on a single through the right side to help Lindenwood to a 7-0 lead after the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Nowak brought in two more runs to increase the lead to nine runs.  Ward poked a double to right center in the bottom of the sixth inning, and later scored on a wild pitch.  After surrendering a run in the top of the seventh, the Lions continued to generate offensive production.  Jayce Maag walked to start the inning, and he scored on a single by Colin Shea to close out the 10-run victory in the second game.
