Game Recap: Softball |

Wendel, Lions Down Panthers in Blue Bridge Battle Finale

The Lindenwood (7-3) softball program capped its second weekend of the 2022 campaign with a Sunday split, avenging an 3-2 afternoon loss to Trevecca with a commanding 7-1 victory over host Kentucky Wesleyan at the Blue Bridge Battle Tournament in Owensboro, Ky.

Whitney Wendel paced the Lions' offense on the day, totaling three RBI in the two contests, while Amanda Weyh tossed a seven-inning complete-game in the nightcap to help improve Lindenwood's record to 7-3 on the season.

GAME ONE OVERVIEW
The Lions suffered a heartbreaking loss in Sunday's opener, dropping a 3-2 decision to Trevecca following a walk-off single to lift the Trojans to victory.

It was a pitching duel to the end, as the teams entered the seventh inning knotted at one apiece. Lindenwood opened the scoring, with Wendel knocking in Taylor Bushman in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly. Following three scoreless frames from the rubber, however, hurler Marina Esparza surrendered a solo homer to Trevecca's Jaylah Edmondson in the fourth to even the score.

Weyh relieved Esparza in the seventh after allowing a walk and double to put the game-winning Trojan on second base. The junior promptly recorded two outs – a flyout and strikeout – before Ashlan Sensing ended the game with a walk-off knock to right field.

GAME ONE LEADERS
Nicole Henson (2-for-4, RBI)
Wendel (RBI)
Bushman (1-for-4, R)

GAME TWO OVERVIEW
The Lions stepped on the gas from the get-go in the weekend's finale, scoring three runs in the first frame. Five-hole hitter Whitney Kinser doubled home Weyh and Henson to build the Lions' lead to three, the latter of which singled three batters earlier to score Henson.

After trading runs in the middle innings, Wendel added two more RBI to her day with a two-bagger that plated Bushman and Theresa Snaidauf in the sixth. Irelynn West followed up with a single, scoring the graduate student Wendel and increasing the lead to six.

Weyh punched out 10 for her fifth win of the spring, improving her ERA to 0.68 and strikeout total to 36 in 30.2 frames. In addition to her double-digit Ks, the junior induced seven groundouts for a season-high total.
