Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Lions Take Down Buckeyes in Five Sets

The Lindenwood men's volleyball team knocked off Ohio State in a 3-2 victory in Hyland Arena on Friday night.

The first set went to the Lions 26-24 in overtime after strong offensive and defensive performances. Diego Negron and Jeremy Kirch each tallied four kills to get things rolling for Lindenwood, while Alex Pappas recorded two block assists and two crucial kills, making things tough on the Buckeyes.

The Buckeyes grabbed the next set 25-20, but the Lions went up 2-1 after a strong third set overtime victory. Negron put up another five kills to lead the way for Lindenwood, while Connor Sheehan contributed 18 set assists to keep the Lions' offensive presence strong.

Ohio State got out in front in the fourth, and Lindenwood looked to close the gap all set long, but the Buckeyes held onto their lead to come out on top 25-21.

The fifth set consisted of back and forth points to start, with neither team getting more than a one point lead for the first several minutes. Things stayed tied at 10-10 until Phil Swartz came up with a huge kill to force the Buckeyes to call a timeout. Negron knocked down a service ace to make it 12-10 Lindenwood, and Swartz teamed up with Kadin Warner to block Ohio State's attempt to come back.

The game ended on another Negron ace to win the set 15-10. Negron led the way with 18 kills overall, while Kirch was right behind him with 17 overall. Sheehan racked up 54 assists overall and Swartz led the way in receptions with 46 total. Kyle Deutschmann took the top spot defensively with 10 digs total, while Pappas tallied a leading four block assists.

Up next, the Lions will look for the second upset of the weekend against Ball State tomorrow in Hyland Arena at 6:00 p.m.
