Game Recap: Softball |

Weyh Sets Single-Season Record, Lions Surpass 30 Wins for First Time Since 2018

The Lindenwood softball team (30-6, 17-3 GLVC) won its fourth straight road game on Saturday, squeaking by host Lewis (20-20, 7-13 GLVC) in a league doubleheader from Romeoville, Ill. The Lions staved off a pair of Flyer comebacks on the afternoon, winning 6-4 and 3-2, respectively.

The sweep also gives the Lions 30 wins on the season, matching their NCAA-record total they set in 2018.

Lindenwood recorded 22 hits on the day, split evenly between the wins. Whitney Wendel went 4-for-4 with a pair of homers in game one, while it was Whitney Kinser's 2-for-4 effort with two RBI in the finale that paced the sweep.

GAME ONE OVERVIEW
Like they have done most of the spring, the Lions scored early in the day's opener with a pair of runs in the first and another in the second. Wendel's first dinger of the day, a shot to left field, also plated Amanda Weyh, while Irelynn West sent one over the right-center field fence the next frame to quickly grab a 3-0 lead.

Seemingly dialed in, Weyh tossed a flawless first five innings, which included 4.1 frames of perfect ball from inside the circle. Lewis did not back down, however, scoring three times in the sixth to even the contest.

After Weyh singled home Taylor Bushman in the seventh to take back the lead at 4-3, Wendel flexed her muscles once more with her second two-run of the afternoon and give the Lions a comfortable lead heading into the bottom of the inning. The Flyers snagged another run off Weyh – the only earned run of the game for the junior – but that was all for the hosts, as the Lions won, 6-4.

GAME ONE LEADERS
Wendel (4-for-4, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 2 R)
West (3-for-3, HR, 3 RBI)
Weyh (1-for-3, 2 R, BB, 7.0 IP, 5 K)

GAME TWO OVERVIEW
Lindenwood struck early again the nightcap, with Kinser singling home Riley Luetkenhaus and Megan Clark in the second inning for a 2-0 advantage.

The Flyers clawed back once again, nibbling a single run off Marina Esparza in both the fifth and seventh innings to force extras. Wendel was also involved in the game-winning run in the finale, as Morgan Gersch chased the Seguin, Texas, native home with a seeing-eye single in the ninth.

Weyh, who entered with one out in the seventh, earned her 18th win of the spring while striking out four in relief.

GAME TWO LEADERS
Kinser (2-for-4, 2 RBI, BB)
Gersch (2-for-5, GW RBI)
West (2-for-4, BB)
Clark (2-for-4, R)

NOTABLE
- Weyh is now the single-season leader in Lindenwood's NCAA era with 18 victories this spring. With her game-two win, she surpassed Stormee Galka's previous record of 17 victories from 2019.
- The Lions are now just one win shy of setting a new program record for most wins in a single spring.
- Lindenwood is tied for second in the GLVC standings with No. 5 UIndy at 17-3. Seventeenth-ranked Southern Indiana, who split with the Greyhounds on Friday, lead the pack at 18-2.
