Seniors Lead the Way in Men's Volleyball Loss to Purdue Fort Wayne

The Lindenwood men's volleyball team was defeated 3-1 by Purdue Fort Wayne in Saturday's senior day celebration in Hyland Arena. 

OVERVIEW
The Mastadons took the first set with a 25-15 victory, coming out strong right from the get go. Jeremy Kirch had a strong first set, however, leading the Lions both offensively and defensively, tallying four kills and three digs. 

The second set went to the Lions in an exciting 25-21 win. Phil Swartz got things rolling late in the set with a five-point service run to put the Lions ahead 21-18. Diego Negron and Kirch each tallied five more kills, while Swartz put up four of his own, helping the Lions put on a powerful offensive performance. Brian Schwob contributed 13 set assists to round out the Lions' winning offense. 

Set three was tied all the way up to 12-12 until the Mastadons pulled away to make things 14-12 after back to back points. Purdue Fort Wayne held the lead for the next several points but the Lions closed the gap again late in the set. The score was sitting at 21-21 after a huge ace from Negron, who had an impressive set with five digs, eight receptions and two block assists throughout the set. The Mastadons ended up with the victory, however, taking the third set by a 25-23 final score.

Purdue Fort Wayne used their momentum to take the fourth set as well, winning 25-17 in the end. Negron put up another convincing stat line, recording five more kills, eight more receptions and the lone Lions' block of the fourth set.

Game leaders include Negron with 18 total kills, hitting .483 on the day. The Puerto Rico native also led the way with a perfect 35 total receptions and zero errors. Kirch recorded the most digs for the Lions with eight total, while Kyle Deutschmann posted seven for a close second. Cal Werths contributed three block assists and one solo to lead the way in the category, and Schwob took the top spot in set assists with 35 total.

The Lions will round out their regular season schedule next weekend starting with a 7:00 p.m. match on Thursday at McKendree.
