The Lindenwood men's ice team shook off their overtime heartbreak from Friday night and showed who they were as a team. The Lion's ROAR was loud and proud in the Centene Community Ice Center as LU battled the Vikings to a 5-3 victory.
Kyle Jeffers' goal on a pass from Kabore Dunn and Coltan Wilkie can only be described as sweet (4:13). Minutes later, Zachary Aughe glided the puck past a stunned Augustana goalie. Aughe may be credited with the goal (8:39) but it was brilliant teamwork by Dunn and Ethan Zielke that led to Aughe being in scoring position. Luke Mobley's weekend performance continued Saturday night, as he scored the first goal for the Vikings at 12:23, to cut Lindenwood's lead in half (2-1). Chase Brand and Hunter Bischoff were each credited with the assist.
The Vikings second goal came at 9:23 when Mobley launched a shot that was saved and Quinn Rudrud was able to propel the puck into the net. With an Augustana player serving a penalty, the Lions' Jake Southgate scored their first powerplay goal of the contest on a pass from Jeffers and Caleb Price.
The third period proved to be one for the books as the Lions took off and didn't look back. Cade DeStefani scored at 2:06. Drew Kuzma and Zielke were credited with the assists for the Lions second power play goal. Aughe scored on a smooth pass from DeStefani and Zielke at 13:05 to place Lindenwood ahead 5-2.
With minutes remaining on the clock, Jack Jensen scored on a powerplay for the Vikings to bring Augustana within two. Rudrud and Uula Ruikka were credited with the assists.
"It's great to win! Learning the sacrifices to win at this level was a good lesson. Now I'd hope we can retain that knowledge because the good feeling will go away," stated Head Coach Rick Zombo.
Lindenwood will host Long Island University (LIU) on Friday and Saturday, November 17th and 18th. Puck drop is slated for 7:10 pm and 2:10 pm, respectively.
