SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Early Saturday afternoon, the Lindenwood women's ice hockey team took on Syracuse in their second matchup of the weekend. The Lions would make an epic comeback by scoring three goals in the final period to tie the Orange 4-4.
GAME OVERVIEW
In the first period, scoring did not come easy with both teams being held scoreless for the majority of the period. With 4:22 left in the period, the Orange tallied the first goal of the game. The Lions would trail 1-0 going into the first intermission.
In the second period, the Lions were able to get on the board from a
Molly Henderson shot, assisted by
Rachel Goff and
Emma Hoen. Syracuse would score two consecutive goals in the period to extend their lead to two. At the end of the period, the Lions would trail the Orange, 3-1.
In the third period, the Orange found the back of the net, just one minute into the period to increase their lead to three. The Lions would not go away quietly, with
Morgan Neitzke scoring just three minutes later to cut Syracuse's lead to two. With five minutes left to go in the final frame,
Sarah Davies would score on the power play to close the gap to just one goal. With 3:03 left in the period,
Olivia Grabianowski would score the equalizer off the power play. Both teams would be held off the scoring column for the remainder of the period and would have to settle for overtime.
In overtime, both teams would come out empty-handed, falling to a 4-4 tie.
Ava McIllmurray started in net for the first time as a Lion, making 30 stops. After this matchup, the Lions moved to 5-8-1 on the season and 2-3-1 in conference play. Neitzke broke Lindenwood's career goal record in this matchup, moving to 35 goals in her career.
