Women’s Rugby Blanks BYU in D1 Elite Match

Women's rugby earned a 72-0 shutout victory against Brigham Young University (BYU) Saturday at South Field in Provo, Utah.

The Lions scored in the first two minutes of the match when after several attacking phases, Demi Allen skirted to the outside and touched down on the edge. With a successful conversion, Lindenwood had an early 7-0 lead.

The two team traded possessions for the next 20 minutes with scrums and lineouts being the main point of attack for the Lions. The forwards scrummaged well and Sophie O'Cain was able to nudge the ball over the defensive line to open some free space for Tanaka Kanyepi to gather it up for the try. Another successful conversion increased the Lindenwood advantage to 14-0 in the 23rd minute.

Just three minutes later, Amy Brice sliced through multiple defenders to score for a 21-0 lead, and then the Lions were awarded a penalty try after the Cougars were called for an aggressive high tackle. The conversion made it 28-0 and that remained the score until halftime.

Points came more often in the second half with Lindenwood adding another 44 to the ledger. The first of many tries came within the first minute after Ahnea Aupiu and Allen worked in tandem to exploit the defense with some great edge work. That resulted in an Allen score and a 33-0 lead.

Taina Tukuafu and Freda Tafuna proved to be pivotal pieces for the Lions attack in the second half. Both were playing their first game of the season after representing the United States at the XV2's in Cape Town, South Africa. Tukuafu used some fancy footwork to elude defenders and dotted down in the 55th minute.

Madison Jersey had her first D1 Elite start for Lindenwood at the wing position and she proved worthy of it with multiple tries. Her quick hands and easy footwork allowed her to walk in for a score in the 60th minute. Just two minutes later, a nice pass from Allen gave her a lane for a 20-meter run for another try.

The Lions continued to pressure the BYU defense and quickly maneuvered close to the line. Tafuna finished off the efforts by bulldozing through two defenders for a converted score in the 65th minute and Lindenwood led 55-0.

Brice scored her second try of the match five minutes later. She walked in under the posts from 20-meters untouched after a spicy starter play off an edge scrum. Allen then completed her hat trick with a third score on the edge to make it 67-0. The final try came from Collins in the 79th minute.

The Lions improved to 3-0 in D1 Elite play. They'll wrap up their fall campaign with a trip to Columbus, Ohio for a neutral site tilt against Penn State November 12. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Ohio State University.
