The Lindenwood men's hockey team (7-18-0) fell by a score of 8-2 to Arizona State (14-18-0) on Friday night from Mullett Arena in Tempe, Ariz.
GAME OVERVIEW
Arizona State got on the board first, finding the back of the net at the 4:38 mark of the opening period. After the early goal, the Lions found their footing, outshooting the Sun Devils 6-3 in the early moments of the period, despite trailing 1-0. Lindenwood found itself on the penalty kill often in the frame but killed off the first two chances against. The Sun Devils, however, scored two quick goals late in the period to grab a 3-0 lead after one period of play.
The Sun Devils ballooned their lead to 5-0 with two quick goals to begin the middle frame. Lindenwood finally broke the shutout at the 11;50 mark, or so they thought. The score by
Caleb Price was challenged and waived off. Just 10 seconds later, the Lions would get one that counted off the ensuing faceoff. Price drove hard to the net and
Caige Sterzer put it home, making the score 5-1.
Aiden Yakimchuk also picked up an assist on the goal. The Sun Devils would score two more times in the period, however, taking a 7-1 lead into the locker room.
Roni Salmenkangas took over between the pipes in the final period and made 15 saves. Sterzer scored his second of the night assisted by
Mitch Allard and Yakimchuk at the 8:07 mark of the final period. ASU would add one final goal to pick up the 8-2 win.
