Softball Wins One on Saturday

ST. CHARLES, Mo. --The Lindenwood softball team (3-9) split a doubleheader on Saturday at Lou Brock Sports Complex.  The Lions lost the morning game to Green Bay by a score of 4-2, but bounced back to earn a 3-1 win over Western Illinois.

GAME ONE
Senior Keighlan Cronin (1-2) started and took the loss in the circle for Lindenwood. Freshman Molly Heidrick was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going two shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking none and striking out two.

Offensively, the Lions were paced by freshman Tori Hatton, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a double, a walk and an RBI. Sophomore Mya Bethany compiled a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lions were trailing 1-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Lindenwood got an RBI single from Bethany, scoring Hatton from third base.

The Phoenix then scored three runs to retake their advantage heading into the seventh inning, when the Lions responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. Freshman Dallis Darnell came across to score the lone run of the inning for Lindenwood, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Phoenix. The Lions were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

GAME NOTES
» Lindenwood's highest scoring inning was the seventh, when it pushed one run across.
» Lindenwood pitchers faced 31 Green Bay hitters in the game, allowing seven ground balls and eight fly balls while striking out six.
» The Lions drew five walks from Green Bay pitching.
» Hatton led the Lions at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
» Green Bay was led offensively by junior Jadin Justman, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
» Senior Brittany Baneck led the Phoenix pitching staff, throwing five innings of one-run ball.

GAME TWO
Senior Amanda Weyh (2-2) got the win for Lindenwood, as the right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing no walks and striking out four.

Sophomore Irelynn West led the way offensively for the Lions, going 1-for-2 in the ballgame with a double, a walk and two RBI. Sophomore Bethany furnished a standout day at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lions got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Lindenwood got on the board thanks to Bethany's RBI double with two outs.

After the Leathernecks rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Lions came back to retake the lead in the fifth inning. Lindenwood pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of West that brought home junior Emma Daniels and junior Chloe Honchar, which brought the Lions lead to 3-1. The score remained 3-1 for the rest of the game, as Lindenwood held on for the win.

GAME NOTES
» Lindenwood's highest scoring inning was the fifth, when it pushed two runs across.
» Lindenwood grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
» Lindenwood pitchers limited Western Illinois to just 2-for-10 (.200) with runners in scoring position.
» Lindenwood pitchers faced 28 Western Illinois hitters in the game, allowing eight ground balls and nine fly balls while striking out four.
» West led the Lions at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI.
» Western Illinois was led offensively by freshman Luna, who went 1-for-3 with a double.
» Senior Rodriguez led the Leathernecks pitching staff, throwing six innings of three-run ball.

Lindenwood will take on Western Illinois in a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 2:00 p.m. at Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
