Women's Basketball Falls to SIUE at Home

Box Score ST. CHARLES, MO. - The Lindenwood women's basketball team dropped a midweek match in a 50-66 final score on Thursday morning to the SIUE Cougars in Hyland Arena.

GAME OVERVIEW
The first quarter was a physical one, with both teams coming out aggressively. Mary McGrath got two unfortunate early fouls, pushing other Lions to step up to open the game. Deving Fuhring got rolling in the scoring category, while Makayla Wallace got to work causing turnovers left and right. Various Lions were active on the boards, making for a well-rounded team effort. SIUE was still able to get the lead, however, and the Lions would trail 11-18 at the conclusion of the first ten minutes.

Lindenwood closed the gap greatly during the second quarter, pushing a 23-27 score heading into halftime. Fuhring broke the double-digit scoring mark early on, heading into halftime with 13 points on her stat line. Other noteworthy performances came from Wallace, who had an impressive five steals in the first half, while Brooke Woodyard and Masyn McWilliams tallied a team-leading five rebounds a piece.

The Lions kept things rolling enough to make it a two-point game at the 5:10 mark, trailing by a narrow 29-31 margin. Things were starting to get more chippy between the two teams, and SIUE was able to maintain their lead throughout the duration of the quarter. McGrath finally got on the board before the quarter was up, knocking a big contested three-pointer in the final minute of play, but the Lions still trailed 36-44.

The fourth quarter was a 10-point game for the majority of the time, but the Lions didn't give up on trying to make the comeback. At the 6:49 mark, with the score sitting at 36-46, Emily Benzschawel hit a huge three off the assist from McWilliams, and shortly after, Striverson knocked in a driving layup. The Lions kept their foot on the gas, but to no avail, and the Cougars extended their lead to 16 points before the final whistle blew.
