SAINT CHARLES, Mo. - Lindenwood men's soccer (1-0-2, 0-0-0 OVC) defeated GLVC opponent Southwest Baptist at Hunter Stadium by a final score of 3-0 Wednesday evening. It marked the first career win for head coach Kris Bertsch.
"Its more fun for the guys, it has nothing to do with me," said Bertsch on his first career victory as the head coach of Lindenwood. "I enjoy the process, guys are getting better each day, each week, each game and today was 90 minutes of process. It took us a little to get going, but once we found the right personnel and the fighting spirit, we locked in together in a solid 3-0 victory."
The Lions went 42 minutes without scoring in the first half before
Cole Hutson scored the first goal for LU on the season with a header just past the right side of the post to give Lindenwood the lead right before half.
Jens Haukeland landed the assists on Hutson's header.
Defense by
Noe Bijou and
Mekhi Wright kept the Bearcats off the scoreboard throughout the game, especially in the first half when SBU only had one shot on goal which was saved by
Enzo Gil.
Lindenwood turned up the pressure in the second half as they would net two more goals.
Bryce Warhaft scored the first goal of his Lindenwood career during the 52nd minute with an assist from
Matty Wackerfuss.
Matteo Boasso would score the third and final goal of the evening during the 62nd minute of action.
Luke Neely provided the cross which allowed Boasso to score his first goal of the season.
Hutson led all players with four total shots and three shots on goal while Herman had two shots on goal. The Lions had a season high 21 shots and 12 shots on goal in their first win of the season. They held the Bearcats to just three shots throughout the match.
Lindenwood will be back in action next week when they head to Macomb, Ill. to take on future Ohio Valley Conference opponent Western Illinois. The match will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 5 starting at 5:00 p.m. and will be streamed on the Summit League Network.
