Lions Fall In Carbondale in Four Sets

Nyah Wilson earned a team high 14 kills

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Lindenwood women's volleyball (4-3, 0-0 OVC) fell to the Salukis of Southern Illinois (5-1, 0-0 MVC) by a final score of 3-1. Lions with 56 total kills in Wednesday's loss on the road.

"I thought we did a great job in the first and fourth sets. The second and third we just could not sustain enough pressure on Carbondale to slow them down," said head coach Will Condon after the match.

The Lions came out the gate with a 25-22 first set win off of a .242 hitting percentage. Seven different Lions had a kill including three each from Ashley Geluck, Rebecca Janke and Addy McAleer.
 
Lindenwood would go up 12-10 early in the first and would follow that with a 4-0 run to make it 16-10. The Salukis went on a 5-0 run themselves to cut the lead to one before LU called a timeout. The Lions went on to take set one after holding SIU to a .171 hitting percentage.
 
Southern Illinois went on to take the second set by a final score of 20-25. Lindenwood was held to just a .119 hitting percentage and eight attack errors.
 
The Lions were down as many as six points early on, 7-13, but fought back with a 6-0 run to tie the set. After a 7-2 Saluki run, Lindenwood again fought back to as close as 19-21 before SIU took the second. McAleer had a team high five kills in the set.
 
SIU continued to find holes in the defense in the third after posting 17 kills in the set on a .314 percentage. Lindenwood's offense produced nine kills in the third and dropped the set 18-25. After being down by as 10, Lindenwood fought back to close the gap late.

The Lions put the pressure on SIU early in the fourth jumping out to a 15-6 lead which forced the Salukis to call a timeout. After multiple comebacks, Southern Illinois tied the match at 24-24. Wilson was able to get to a 25th point, but SIU closed out the match winning 27-25.

Wilson and McAleer led the team with 14 kills each while Janke added another 11 kills. Wilson also made multiple defensive stops with eight digs. Mia Kunnert, Jessie Seidel and Abby VanBuskirk also had an ace each.

Defensively the Lions had three players with double digit kills. Seidel led the way with 18 while Allie Otten and VanBuskirk had 15 and 11 respectively. All three players also had double digit assists with Otten leading the way with 17.

"I do think there was some progress made and lessons learned tonight. It may not necessarily shown as much as we wanted to in the scores but it was still there," said Condon.

The Lions will be back this weekend as they head to Clarksville, Tenn. for the Stacheville Challenge hosted by Austin Peay/ LU will take on Big Ten opponent Indiana on Friday and Valparaiso on Saturday. For more information go to lindenwoodlions.com.
